Gregory at 27?

Given our ability to get troubled players (read: Dez) the support they need and get them on the right track, and the need in our system for "rushmen" (see: Seattle), if Gregory falls to 27, which seems likely, do we take him? I know he is supreme knucklehead, and purely stupid for failing a drug test at the combine, but so did Warren Sapp. And that worked out pretty well. Gregory would fill a huge need in a rotation at DE while Hardy is out. And give us a talented bookend with D Law next year if we dont re-sign Hardy. I know it is a tremendous risk, but I could see the NFL changing its marijuana policy (given the national trend) and making it more lenient in the next couple of years. And I'm not sure, but I think that Gregory joins the NFL with a "clean slate," so even his first positive test wont be a suspension. Plus, we might require him in the contract to take weekly drug tests. Anyway, it's a thought. [Note: some may feel he is not a great prospect because he is too light for DE; but I see us using him as Seattle uses Bruce Irvin whom they picked high in the first round; situational rusher that you can just turn loose on 2nd and 3rd downs; just cant have enough elite pass rushers in today's NFL].

No, no, and no!

Too small for a 4-3 scheme. And there's a difference in growing up (maturity issues Dez had), and trying to rely on a drug user who can't stop his habit even though he knows it may cost him money by dropping in the draft (Gregory). He's addicted to pot (please, I don't want to hear a lecture on pot not being addictive. ANYTHING can be addictive, chemically or otherwise, especially if you can't stop doing it when you know it can cost you).

I stay far, far away from him in rounds 1 or 2.

I would not draft him at all.

Yeah he's way too small + effort red flags

Bruce Irvin was 6-3 240lbs coming out off college.. Could we use a guy like Gregory like Seattle uses Irvin?

I can understand your position. If he fell fourth or lower, take a flyer on him - in my opinion. Then if he's undependable, cut him. You don't waste losing a high draft pick.

Randy Gregory, Nebraska
Measurables:
6-5, 235, 4.64
Stats: 17 1/2 sacks in two years
Scouts Say: "I like him better than (Ziggy) Ansah (of Detroit Lions by way of Nebraska). Now, you have the (marijuana) thing, that doesn't help anyone. But I think he'll be a good player.''

Yeah...I read that as well.

Answer is still...

NO. Until Gregory figures out that Football and a job is more important than smoking Mary Jane he is a suspension waiting to happen. Plus apparently he is to stupid to figure out how to do it without being caught as he has been caught two times PRIOR to the being caught at the combine. He was getting dinged so often that it is reported one of his coaches told them to stop testing him because he would fail.

No...NO...NOOOOOOOOO

Kid is an idiot.

Irvin is a 4-3 LB that rusher that is a situational pass rusher. He played DE as a rookie, but the moved him to LB his 2nd season.

Gregory's value as a non passing type LB would be much lower then the 1st round. Marinelli would have to make changes to his defense in order to use him as both a pass rusher and LB.

Character concerns aside, would you rather fit in Gregory or Shaq Thompson? Both will take adjustments to the defense.

They could put Shaq into the Nickel defense with no adjustment. They played Nickel 66% of the snaps in 2014. In the past teams drafted 2 down LB that were replaced in the Nickel. In the modern NFL it would make sense to do the opposite and put the focus on the quality pass defender.

Gregory should be a perfect fit for 3-4 teams. If he falls to #27 then a lot of teams believe that he will have problems in the future. He won't have less problems just because he got drafted lower. I would likely have to pass.

So is that scout.
Ansah was 270 pounds and had played about 2 years of football.
He had more to learn than Gregory but a far higher ceiling.

Gregory might hit but you are gonna have to either put significant weight on him or watch him get eaten up in the run game.

A lot of what he did in college was against either smaller players he could tackle with just his arms or against OL he could simply outquick.

He did not impress me live and I thought he was small long before we saw his weights.

I wouldn't touch Gregory til at least round 3 which makes me an outlier but his the single highest overrated guy int his draft IMHO.

Gregory rare speed, Dion jordan or Jason Taylor? IMO not a great fit for us. O Odiggy is a Ziggy Ansah type explosive and incredibly competitive not a bad choice in the late 1st.
