The current group is "on paper" at this point.
There is definitely potential to be very good and deep, but the depth is just potential at this point.
DLaw + Griffen
Aldon Smith: 4 years out of football
Randy Gregory: Talented but only 1 start in 28 games played.
Others: Unproven.
In the history of the NFL DLaw is just a guy.
- He wouldn't start on a team with prime years Harvey Martin and Ed Jones.
- I'm not certain that DLaw would even start over Tony Tolbert with Jimmy as HC.
- Tolbert would have had far more sacks if that was his top responsibility.
- Tolbert was a the base DE with run contain as his top priority. He had 12 sacks in 96 when Haley only started 5 games due to injury.
Jim Jeffcoat was the 3rd DE in 92. He has 102 career sacks and played 5 more years after the 92 season.
Unfortunately we can't really compare stats due to different eras.
- There is far more passing now which means far more sack opportunities.
- Sacks were not an official stat for all of Harvey Martin's career.
Thanks for sharing;
You make several good points. Gregory and Anae are more potential than proven.
- Yeh, this is not a knock against 70's era of starters vs this year's starters. heck Griffin may only play just one year here.
B ut more so measuring the quality of depth behind these starters vs any other Cowboys era.
- You bring up a great example with Jim Jeffcoat (who i forgot played behind Haley/Tolbert)
Jeffcoat is actually a 100 sack club. he is even ahead of Charles Haley on the NFL's All time Sack History.
A very underrated rotational sack artist.
Interestingly Jeffcoat has never made a single all pro or pro bowl during his career. Even specialist sack artists like Fred Dean and
Greg Townsend have have All pro/pro bowl accolades.
- Sure Aldon has missed 4 yrs and still getting re-adjusted to NFL again, and Cowboys nation could be jumping the gun vs scrub OTs
in camp if all indication with his early matches with Tyron are encouraging, this was a guy that was the fastest player in NFL history to
record his 30th sack in just his first 27 games. Most sacks in a player's first 2 seasons in NFL. and a former All pro and pro bowler.
