Topic of discussion: how close are the Dallas Cowboys to returning to the Super Bowl? Credit Mac Engel at the DFW S-T for opening up this debate today. It’s been an oft heard refrain lately from Cowboys supporters and even some neutral press that the Cowboys are close to returning to elite status in the NFL. But are they really?

Over the past four years we’ve made the playoffs twice, and in both instances we bowed out in the first round. We just changed coaches and to some extent, philosophy, which usually causes a team to struggle until they can incorporate everything smoothly into the new team. The Cowboys are also relying on a QB who seems to be a franchise-type, but hasn’t really proven that yet. This should cause some pause when discussing the Cowboys as close to returning to the Super Bowl.

On the other hand, the Cowboys are definitely on the rise, their cycle of downtime seemed to reach its nadir with the consecutive 5-11 seasons under Dave Campo. Bill Parcells was brought in to restructure the roster, and to some extent, the way the Cowboys organization thought about running an NFL franchise. Play on the field noticeably improved. The Cowboys roster is loaded with young, and potentially gifted, football players.

There are a couple of factors that play into this theme of the Cowboys being close. One, the NFC is a wide-open conference. It truly does not have an elite cadre of teams that are poised to dominate over the next few years. This leaves the impression that almost any decent team that puts together good roster choices with a good bit of luck and deft management can reach the Super Bowl from the NFC. Another theme is the Cowboys themselves, we – as fans – are almost universally optimistic that we will reclaim our rightful spot as NFL champions. This is embodied in the ever-present optimism of our owner, Jerry Jones. The problems is that sometimes as fans, and as an organization, we believe so much in our future, that we tend to over-estimate our own talent level in terms of an NFL roster.

So the question is posed – are we close, or are we just imagining that we are close?

Bradie James takes a pragmatic view.
"I just think it's tough to say we're close when we haven't even played for a division championship," linebacker Bradie James said. "When we get to that point, then we'll be close. Until then, we need to get some playoff wins. It takes more than just making the playoffs."

That's kinda redundant. So when are you close to being elite? When you are close to being able to win a SB? Well, when are you close to that?

I disagree. San Diego, New England, and Baltimore were elite teams last year. None of them won the superbowl. Indianapolis had been an elite team for years before finally winning the superbowl.

I'd be thrilled if the Cowboys made it to the NFC Championship game this year. Like any other fan I want to see this team win the SB but given the depths the team has been in I would call a trip to the NFC Championship game a successful season and would consider the Cowboys back to the table of the elite.

Skins fans dont think its redundant. All they have to do is win a playoff game last year and theyre the class of the league.

New England and Baltimore have won the superbowl in recent memory. I dont consider San Diego elite mainly because of their coaching mainly.

Its an opinion anyway. I dont not believe that we will have arrived until we see Romo, Witten, Ware, Williams and Newman hoisting the Lombardi.

Baltimore?

Nothing that happened to that team in 2000 has anything to do with there team now. Hell, they started changing that team right away.

If we get a pass rush and better safety play who has a better team than us in the NFC?

Not Philly. Not Seattle. Not NO. Maybe Chicago if Rex becomes a good QB this year.

Billick is still the coach, Newsome is still the personell man Guysl like Lewis Ogden Reed, McCalister, Gragg, Heap and Stover remain starters from the 2001 supe4rbowl team. Heck last year they still had Lewis.

Other than Starks and Dilfer, the marquee names remain the same.

The RedStinks are! Just read this board when they show up...

 Someone pointed out that over on ES they are REALLY thinking that they are going to the NFC champ game this year.

It's come to this?

We're "close"??

I don't think many folks are suggesting there is final satisfaction in "being close." Is there some satisfaction in that? Absolutely! You better believe I am more satisfied today than during the drought of 2000 - 2002. Will I be satisfied if 9-7 ends up being the pinnacle? Of course not.

I think many Cowboy fans are wondering just how close we are.

I think we wonder what might have been had our seemingly talented defense not crumbled late last season, had we gotten a little better blocking be it run or pass, or a decent pass rush from anyone besides Ware.

I think we wonder what might have happened had Romo been able to handle that snap, or Gramatica fallen in front of Babineaux to enable a Romo 1st down or even a touchdown.

I think we wonder what might have happened if we'd made the trip to Chicago.

I think we wonder if perhaps we might have been able to repeat that victory over Indy had we gotten the chance.

I think we wonder if adding Wade, Hamlin & Spencer is gonna push that defense over the top.

I think we wonder if Leonard Davis is a major upgrade over Marco Rivera & if Flozell with be better in his 2nd year back from knee surgery.

I think we wonder if that O-line just might gell, and with a little freer reign we might get back the Julius of 2004 in more consistent doses.

I think we wonder what last years baptism by fire and an offseason/training camp as the starter might do for Tony Romo's play?

I think we hope that age catches up with none of our aging stars, and injuries stay away, and that Wade brings only relief and productive schemes and not a lack of discipline, and that staff turnover actually enhances our team rather than sets it back.

And lastly we hope that Parcells, though credited with a roster renewal, was actually holding the team back.

I think we Cowboy fans are excited about the possibility that more of the above will be answered positively than negatively and that we may therefore be on the precipice of something really good.

I don't think that's unreasonable to hope for. But the proof will be in the pudding.
