The spotlight has found Martellus Bennett. The Dallas Cowboys second round pick at tight end was not an expected pick for many of the draft-watchers of the team. Only a day before the draft, the Cowboys got rid of another second round TE who didn’t work out as expected, Anthony Fasano. Still, that left Dallas with all-everything TE Jason Witten and steady backup Tony Curtis. Bill Parcells was gone so most thought that Dallas wasn’t in the business of collecting TE’s anymore, but when the second round came around, the Cowboys war room selected Martellus Bennett. And promptly mentioned having to keep a foot on his neck to get the potential out of him. That foot is TE coach John Garrett, and so far, the foot/neck relationship is off to a very rocky start.

HBO's Hard Knocks lives with the Dallas Cowboys at camp, and while the debate about whether the cameras affect the Cowboys preparations goes on, there is no debate that the cameras do affect the way the fans see certain players. The spotlight will sometimes find a player and what we see is not always to our liking. Bennett’s primetime debut on TV is more like bad community theater. It’s just painful to watch.

Herein lays the power of television. Because we see it, we believe it. It seems like such a simple proposition. But we should know better by now, we’ve all been living in the age of reality television – we know that the “reality” in these shows are all relative. Take hours and hours and hours of tape, chop it up into a 50 minute show, and present some drama. That’s the basic formula.

You might be thinking that I’m working my way to some sort of defense of Bennett’s attitude at camp. You’d be incorrect. Those moments are there on tape and they show a very immature kid who doesn’t appear to be taking this huge opportunity with any kind of seriousness or desire. The Cowboys knew he was that kind of player coming in, but his potential talent and athleticism told them to take the risk. We are just moments into his career but those moments are beginning to paint a picture. HBO/NFL Films knew the back-story, they were ready to show it and danged if Bennett didn’t give them the ammunition. Most of us will walk away from the 2008 preseason with a very negative portrait of Bennett provided to us by the good people at HBO. It’s amazing what 10 minutes or so of screen time can accomplish.

Now Martellus Bennett is a marked man. He wears the Scarlet Letter, and it will color our perceptions of the guy for the immediate future. If he spends this year making mistakes, blowing assignments and generally not playing up to NFL standards, he will get crushed by the media and the fans. He won’t be just a rookie making mistakes; he’ll be a bad-attitude, no work-ethic, doesn’t-get-the-opportunity-in-front-of-him, bust. He’s no longer just an anonymous rookie trying to feel his way through the NFL, where articles in the press would still leave us with a divided opinion, just like we’ve had on so many players previously.

Not so with Martellus. It was all on TV. We’ve seen him roll his eyes at a coach who’s just trying to help him, something we’d let slide with an older vet, but not a rook with problems. We’ve seen him stand there and move in slow-motion as a coach tells him to put on his helmet, making the coach say it three times and still not doing it in a timely fashion. We’ve seen him make the coach give him instructions about tucking the ball away repeatedly, and taking forever to show the coach the proper motion, and then watch him drop a ball in a game and have him say it was because he didn’t tuck the ball away. The list goes on and it’s only two shows into the series.

HBO/NFL Films could redeem Bennett to some extent. Imagine if over the next couple of shows Hard Knocks presents the great reversal plot twist. They start showing moments when Bennett is attentive, or shots of him catching passes - even though it might be only a few, if you give it right the right background music and roll it in super slo-mo, it will look like he’s all-world. All you need is about five or six catches in a nice montage. Bennett might not be doing that much differently, he’d probably still be making some of the same mistakes we’ve seen, but our perception could change. And right now when there is probably lots of footage of him doing good things, it ended up on the cutting room floor. Reality courtesy of an editing machine. But even a reversal wouldn’t change the view entirely, what we see first tends to stick with us.

There’s no real point to this rant except to say that when the spotlight finds you on TV you’d better be ready for your close-up because people rarely forget their first impressions. Martellus Bennett didn’t know that rule. Now he’ll be fighting perception for a while. I’m not here to say whether Bennett will ultimately succeed or fail in Dallas, although I certainly have an opinion on that. I’m here to say that he’s got to succeed at a pretty high-level and a little bit quicker, or the fans will be restless.

I already know his issues. I saw them on TV.

There are two Martellus Bennetts which HBO will have opportunity of showcasing during next Wednesday's episode: the Martellus Bennett during practice and the Martellus Bennett during the Denver game.

Bennett has the opportunity to do enough PR for himself when the cameras are trained on him during practice. He simply needs to subtract examples of idiocy which have already been caught on film, which he's fully aware of now. If he does so, I believe that his performance during the actual game will be evaluated by fans moreso by his progress as a player than by his attitude. I know that it will for me personally.

Grizz is a writer when he wants to be. He nails it here.

Take away the cameras, and Bennett has nobody to smile at after Garrett's little speech.

Take away the microphones, and Garrett has nobody to say "Oh God, one of those days now" to earlier in the same segment.

Sure, TV can distort reality. But I really hope we're seeing the real Bennett. Not because I care that much about him. It's because I also want to believe everything I'm seeing with T.O. in his close-up.

I hated the T.O. signing. Hated it. I couldn't let go of the star episode and had long-since written him off as a selfish egomaniac. The first year under Parcells didn't do anything to change my opinion. I appreciated his effort last season and was relieved that he was bonding with Romo, but I still wasn't completely sold. I admit it- after watching these shows, I feel myself doing a complete 180 on the guy. He's really funny, but more importantly, he really appears to be a hard worker, a good teammate and a leader. It must be really hard for fans of other teams to be coming to the same realization I am- that T.O. may actually be as great as he's always said he is.

Great article, BTW

Maybe Hard Knocks is just the thing to keep on Bennett's tail.

I'm glad he's being featured, and in a negative way. He needs a fire to be lit under his can. And maybe this is the vehicle that does it.

After Bennett gets his legs under him and starts producing in his role, some of you are "gonna have some splainin to do".

He will be a redzone threat for sure.

Well written and good reflection of our society. Right or wrong, Bennett will learn the impact of first impressions. If he doesn't do well on the field he won't be given any slack by fans (or media).

Care to elaborate on that stance? Care to fully explain your point instead of running away without ANY evidence to back it up?

He needs to be beat up.

Most rational fans are not calling for him to cut, but they are calling on him to man up.

I see not one reason to defend the guy.

Go out and play like man on the playing field and act like a man off of it.

It is that simple.

Nothing good comes from Hard Knocks exposure.

Parcells is laughing at JJ - JJ loves the circus and shopping for the dinner. Precipice for disaster.

While I somewhat agree with you, I really don't care what Parcells' reaction may be. He's in the Dolphins front office and no longer has any tangible connection with this franchise. He's opinion is no greater or less than any non-Cowboy official.

Jerry Jones does love the publicity. It is one of his strengths, but he isn't intentionally allowing HBO access to undermine his own team. He's doing so to promote his product, the Dallas Cowboys, and he's doing a hell of a job. So, respect him for only that if you can find anything else to validate the Hard Knocks intrusion.

Granted, Hard Knocks IS an intrusion which could develop into a distraction. However, if that problem does come to fruition, it is Wade Phillips who will be responsible for getting the team's focus solely on the ultimate goal--which is a date with the AFC representative (sorry, it's probably not going to be the Patriots, Nors  ) next February. Phillips will earn his pay if that's the case or he will not; but as a Cowboys fan, I'll have to hope that he does.

I have no idea if Bennett is going to make the Cowboys....or be an impact player in the NFL. Hopefully, we don't need him to be an impact player right now. That being said, he does not come across as someone who is working hard to be a success. It is hard, as a fan, to like a rookie if they come across as arrogant. For whatever reason, Bennett has provided that impression. We'll see.

Screw Bennett.

"Oh, he's just a kid! He's immature and all. He didn't really mean to move like a frozen snail when told by his coaches to do something."

Hey, Felix, Jenkins and Amendola are rooks, too. They aren't acting like wankers...only this guy is. And trust me, if any of the aforementioned players were being ******** the HBO guys would gladly show it to the world come showtime.

Mistake letting hard knocks in the locker room. We are dealing with issues that should have been kept inhouse.

But Richmond Flowers and Denny Amendola will live on forever on HBO....SADLY CAMPO IS BACK TO THIS DEBACLE.....

Breathe.

The regular season isn't here yet; and everything which has been 'uncovered' by HBO's Hard Knocks coverage hasn't been of any real significance.

Nice tie-in of Flowers and Amendola, Nors.
