Lunch w 60s-70s Boys Tony Liscio, Ralph Neely, John Niland, Roger Staubach, Tom Rafferty, Herb Scott, Burton Lawless

John Niland's playing height and weight were: 6'3" and 245. Roger was 6'3". Poor John has shrunk. Didn't realize age shrunk you up so much. So now I have that to look forward to as well as losing the rest of my hair.

And my have the times changed. Niland wouldn't be a guard on any team in this era.

its amazing the difference is size of todays players and those of the old days

Jim Brown was as big as 70% of the defensive lineman he ran up against. And he was faster than 70% of the linebackers and secondary.

I can still remember watching those guys like it was just yesterday. Thanks so much for posting this picture. Just some of my old Cowboy heros from my childhood. Damn I miss those days. It literally brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.

Rafferty who probably is the youngest of the group looks like the oldest of them. Very underrated guy. Played with Roger, Danny and Troy. Not too shabby.

That was the first thing I noticed. I was trying to figure out if it was an optical illusion since Staubach is just a few inches closer to the camera, but I think he just shrunk that much. Staubach may have shrunk, too.

Tony Liscio was a big part of the first SB winning team....he took over for Neely at left tackle after coming out of retirement.

Ruff Ruff was his nickname I believe. He and Herb Scott on that same OL. With? Pat Donovan, one of our greatest ever OLmen. Fitzgerald. And Coooooooooper. Four Irishmen & a Scott was the nickname. They DOMINATED the line of scrimmage long before the 90s crew came along to follow suit :)

Actually, for OL dominance:

60s/70s with Neely, Niland, etc.
More 70s: with the Four Irishmen & a Scott line
90s: You guys know...
Now: The amazing line we now are blessed with

Surprised no one is talking about the gentleman on the far right - Burton Lawless.
I am thrilled to see him walking again. If I remember correctly, he had a multi-ton snow plow blade fall on the back of his neck shortly after he retired from football. I thought he was paralyzed for a time. I could have been mistaken.

Don't forget Hall of Famer Rayfield Wright.

Lawless signed a contract with the Chicago Bears for 1982. However, in May, during the off-season, a 12-foot, 5,000-pound plow-arm fell on his head and neck, causing him to be paralyzed from the neck down for 17 days and ending his professional career.--Michael Henry, "Miraculous: From glory to near death, Burton Lawless says 'life has been great'," The Evening Independent, p. 1-C (January 11, 1984). Retrieved March 29, 2013

I'll say this - the offensive line from the 90's gets all the hype and yes they were dominant but the lines of the 70's and early 80's were damn solid across the board. You don't have the kind of success that those teams had without being solid up front.
