Guitar licks (Shared)

Next up. More blues. I tried to put the timing on this one, but it's a train-wreck and removed it. :(

Just a quick note on how to read it for those that are semi-new to reading tab. The "b" means bend the string and the second number is how high to bend it. So, when you see 10b12, it means bend the string at the 10th fret and bend it enough where the note sounds like the 12th fret being played.

The "v" is vibrato. Or shake the strings so it's sound raises and lowers quickly. (like singers do with their voice)

Now, I have two note sequences. They start the same, but finish differently. It gives you two looks at how you can play blues in pentatonic minor.

These are blues, so they aren't necessarily played really fast. The first bend is basically played the length of a whole note. The rest are mostly quarter or 8th notes.

These are in the key of E.

Code:
(/) Slide Up (\) Slide Down (h) Hammer On (p) Pull Off (b) Bend (r) Release (v) Vibrato

E|---------------------------------------------------------------------
B|--10b12--10p8--10p8--------------------------------------------------
G|---------------------9v------7--9v-----------------------------------
D|------------------------7/9---------7/9p7------7--------------5------
A|-------------------------------------------10-----10--7\5--------7v--
E|-----------------------------------------------------------7---------

This one the ending IS played more quickly. The hammer on / pull off are probably 16th notes and the rest are maybe 8th notes.

Code:
(/) Slide Up (\) Slide Down (h) Hammer On (p) Pull Off (b) Bend (r) Release (v) Vibrato

E|--------------------------------------------------------------------
B|--10b12--10p8--10p8-------------------------------------------------
G|---------------------9v------7--9v--7h9p7-----7---------------------
D|-------------------------7/9---------------9-----9--7------7\5------
A|-------------------------------------------------------10-------7v--
E|--------------------------------------------------------------------

I was going to try and record some of these so you can hear them, but I'm missing my USB cable for my USB audio capture device.

Is anyone actually using these? I don't want to waste time if nobody actually use them.

Hey Dan,

try this out.

Crazy Train (not alot, but a very recognizable piece when YOU play it ;)

E --------17--16--14-------------14--16--17--17B----
B ----------------------17B---------------------------

Had ti fix Crowley - ignore the above

Mr Crowley (again, simple but you will hear Randy, I promise)

E----15----12---------12------9--10--12--13-12----10^12^10^12^10^12--12
B----------------11

^ = hammer

That was pretty damn cool! Thanks. That's the way I try to learn everything. Just break it down into sections and learn them cold, then string it all together. Good stuff.

Keep em coming....I love trying new licks. I'd love to hear how I'm playing them vs. how you're plaing them vs. how somebody else is playing them....might be pretty cool.

No prob. :)

I know you love the Crazy Train intro riff.

Randy was a master at using the same riffs and yet they didnt sound the same.

Here is an example:

Crazy Train -

3x

|-------------------------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------------------------|
|-------------------------------------------------------|
|------4---5---4-----2-------2--------------------------|
|--2-2---2---2---2-----5-4-5----5-4-0-------------------|

Now, look at Diary of a Madman

Diary of a Madman -

:------------------------------------------------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------------|
B:------------------------------------------------------------------------|---------------------------------------------------------|
G:-------5-----4-------------2------4------5------4--------2----------|-----------5-----4-----2-----4-----5-----4-------------|
D:----------2-----2------2------2------2------2-------2--------2-----|--------2-----2-----2-----2-----2-----2----------------|
A:---0----------------0-------------------------------------------------|----0----------------------------------------------------|
E:------------------------------------------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------------0-------|

I'm going to take my first guitar lesson ever tonight after probably a total of about 15 years of playing. (89'-2000, 2008-present)

Cool.....never can learn too much. RR often used to take lessons on the road with Oz and often times was better then the instructor and ending up teaching them.

I picked up Cakewalk Music Creator 5 recording software over the weekend and finally got a chance to install it.

This thread didn't really take off so I will let it die. I will however go ahead and post the audio of the tab I posted earlier since I can now record it. (in at least a decent recording quality)

I don't have a lot of nature rhythm, but I tried to make this sound as good as I could. As you will see, my playing can be a little clunky in some places. :(

The audio is in mp3 format.

Here is the audio to the very first post.

Here is the audio to the second tab posting which was basically a Metal fill riff. The sound quality is a little noisy. I was using a Digitech RP355 and some odd setting I found. There was probably a better one to use, or just use straight distortion. Excuse the sound quality (humming static sound) here.

Finally, here is the audio for the third tab posting which was two different similar blues sequences. The recording plays the first one, then the second one right after it.

Cool stuff! I love the sound of your guitar on the 1st and 3rd recording. Not sure about your metal career, but you've the blues before sunrise!

How do you like Cakewalk? I have Sonar 7 by Cakewalk and I really like it, but I haven't hooked it all back up yet since I've moved.

The sound I'm using is a mixture of different effect, but it's a stock mix on my Digitech RP355. It's #23 and called "Greaser". It's easily my favorite stock tone that my RP355 has.

The metal one isn't that clean sounding. I should have recorded it with straight distortion. That one has a very muddy sound. I don't care for it so much.

I've just started learning Music Creator, but I've learned some minor editing techniques using it. (triming, spliting, etc) I've got a long way to go though. I haven't tried mixed anything or put back tracking in. Basically thus far I've made three recordings and you heard all three.

That's awesome man, keep it up. Keep this thread alive. I'll try to contribute to it soon.

We will see. I have some practicing to do this weekend. I might jot down a some and post them with an mp3 again.

I'm not a guitar player (drummer), but I showed your efforts to a friend of mine who was thoroughly impressed. Hopefully, word of mouth wuill keep the thread going. Nice effort. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

Today I'm going to go with something I didn't write, but is one of the best riffs in history from the great Eddie Van Halen.

This I would say is of medium difficulty, but if you keep practicing it; you will get it.

Van Halen - Ain't Talking about Love

Repeat the following maybe four times. The first five notes specifically are notes of the A minor cord, so just start by holding an A minor cord.

I hope you enjoy this one. You can impress all your friends once you've got it down! ;)

Code:
E ----------0-1-----3----------------
B ------1-------1-----3--------------
G --------2-------2------------------
D ----2------------------------------
A --0---------------------3---2-3----
E ----------------------3------------
   |<--- palm muted ---->|

Then repeat this a couple of more times.

Code:
E --------------3-----------------------
B --1-----1-----0-----------------------
G --2-----2-----0-----------------------
D --2-----2-----0-----------------------
A --0-----0-----2-------------3---2-3---
E --------------3----------3------------
   Am Am G

The exact amount of repeating can be found listening to the Youtube song below. (no point in recording this since it already exists) There is some small leads in it also, but I didn't post those. Don't actually know them right now, but I will probably figure them out.

Thanks Phil. I'm glad I can help. I know nothing is better than learning something cool!
