Got a 60s Gibson Tribute but with Gibson 490r/498t Blackout Pickups (not original). Don't like the combo. Trying to decide on replacement pickups. Want Humbuckers or mini-humbuckers although would consider P90s, or maybe my favorite Dimarzios although not sure which one. I'll be getting a faded 17 SG with the titanium nut at some point when I'm ready to learn slide.

Can I put the titanium nut on the 60s Tribute? That way I could use one guitar for regular play and slide.....I think.

Your thoughts?

Hmm. I've owned two Les Pauls (studio that I sold, and now a Standard) Though I've always left the pickups as they were as they both have / had great sound.

With that said, I don't have a lot of knowledge about Gibson pickups. If I were going to choose, I might go with a P94R in the neck and a Gibson '57 Classic in the bridge. (or if you want hotter, a Gibson 500T)

As a huge DiMarzio fan, the ToneZone is my goto bridge pickup. (it's the only one DiMarzio bridge pickup that I use) For the neck I've had both a PAF Pro and my current Ibanez has an Air Norton. I do prefer the Air Norton to the PAF Pro. If you decide to go with DiMarzio, I couldn't recommend the ToneZone more.

Don't know much about gibson pickups so I did not chime in earlier.

For my grungy metal sound I like the emg 81/85 set so I can get that killer pinched harmonic growl.

For standard rock it's hard to beat the seymour duncan JBs

However I will admit...I have been jonesing for a Gibson SG or that Gibson les paul blueberry burst that came out last year.

Have also been eyeballing the Epiphone versions of those as they are probably more along the lines of what I would want to spend...as I have also been jonesing for a Glock 19 gen 5

As far as you wanting the slide sound...I think any of the Gibson Pickups would work for you but I would hazard to guess the p90's might give you more of a vintage sound and possible even closer to a single pickup ala a fender strat.

If memory serves I think I seen a video where a guy redid a gibson and he wanted a large number of options so on one, or both, pickups he used a P90 RAIL pickup. It looks like a cross between a humbucker and rail and it sound like it had the option of sounding like a fuller humbucker and a single coil. Like I said it seems to give you the most options of different sounds. Of course you would have to install all of those to your pots and make sure you have push pull options on them so you might need to replace those as well.

Lots of good thoughts guys. Trying to find out about those three way Godin pickups which are switchable from Humbucker, P90, and single coil. Heard not great not bad.

Sounds to me like you will figure it out. You know how you want the axe to perform. Trial and error carried all the greats.

Great and my guitar playing don't belong in the same universe. We are pitiful.

I've always wanted to learn guitar. I can read and write music and know how to play the piano and harmonica, but the guitar has eluded me, although my brother was an SRV neophyte and fronted his own band (he's such a punk...).
One day...
I should just cross the border to Juarez and grab me a decent guitar on the Mexico-cheap and take online lessons, but I like one-on-one's.

I'm trying to learn to mute all the notes I'm not playing but I'm much closer to this style.

I think I'm going to get a Chinese SG and customize it with newer non Gibson humbuckers.

Have become pretty decent at palm muting with both hands... Something you learn thrash like Metallica and others over the years.

You might also try a capo around first fret if want to deaden non fretted notes.

Get a Chibson and just change the pickups or change it all. Cheap if you do it yourself especially.

I don't even know what you're saying when you throw out "change the pickups" et al...
I do know music though and how to play by ear. That's how I've always done it.

We're hitting Juarez this weekend. I might walk back across the bridge with an instrument in hand.

Epiphone is the cheaper version of the Gibson. Made in China with some cheaper parts to save money.
