Epiphone is the cheaper version of the Gibson. Made in China with some cheaper parts to save money.
For learning, I definitely want to go a bit cheaper while maintaining a decent semblance of quality.
I'll look into those. Thanks!

I don't even know what you're saying when you throw out "change the pickups" et al...
I do know music though and how to play by ear. That's how I've always done it.

We're hitting Juarez this weekend. I might walk back across the bridge with an instrument in hand.

A Chibson is a Chinese Gibson. Like BP said Epiphone is a Chinese guitar with cheaper hardware than the Gibson (mostly). Epiphones used to be made in Japan and then Korea now China. You can get a solid body single piece body and neck these days with great paint and bindings. You can even order custom hardware and get it shipped directly to you. Some companies will even throw in wax potted pickups so you can play max volume without feedback. Just talk to them. Youtube will get you started in the right direction. They will put good tuners in for you. Not a lot of work but you can likely find someone to replace hardware for $250 labor and $200-400 parts. Personally I'd buy a Gibson Studio or Faded SG and get the real thing. Or you can go with other companies. I have a used Strat that plays ok for $350. Many ways to go esp if you look around for a used axe.

Get a Chibson and just change the pickups or change it all. Cheap if you do it yourself especially.

You've got to be very careful with Chibsons (or any Chinese version) Sometimes you might get something decent enough that can be upgraded on the cheap side, but sometimes you get your lunch eaten from what I've read. From what I can see, to bring a Chibson up, you're going to spend at least as much as you already paid for it. So, you're still looking at a $500-$600 investment.

In effect, I would go Epiphone before Chibson. You can get a Epiphone SG for around $700. That's twice the price of a Chibson, but you without question will get a much better quality guitar right out the door. I wouldn't speculate on this, just go for what you know is a better guitar.
