Couple of questions.

1. Who here plays guitar? (I don't mean you own a guitar that never comes out of the closet, I mean actually play it with at least some regularity at some point during the the year.

2. No matter if you play or not, if you own a guitar(s) what is it / are they? (brand, model, year, color)

3. Finally, how often do you play? (daily, couple of times a week, etc)

My answers:

1. I do!
2. I own two.
  • 1997 Ibanez RG170 in a kind of sparkly green with upgraded Dimarzio pickups. (Neck: PAF, Single Coil: H3, Bridge: ToneZone)
  • 2010 Gibson Les Paul Studio in Red Wine with gold hardware
  • Used to own: 1989 Black Fender Stratocaster Squire II. (man do I wish I still had that guitar :( )
3. My playing is cyclical. I will play a lot (daily to 3-4 times a week) for 3-6 months during the year, then I won't play so much for a while. Maybe 2-5 times a month for the rest of the year except every once in a while I will play a lot during a week or two span then it will die off again.

While I play guitar, I don't consider myself a musician. I do write some riffs or leads, but I never write an entire song and I don't learn entire songs either. I solely play for my own enjoyment.

Actually, my Les Paul maybe a 2009. Trying to remember exactly when I bought it....

EDIT: It was this year. I posted about it back in March

I have:
Taylor acoustic - circa 2004
Gibson Les Paul Studio - Red - 2008
Martin Backpacker - 2006
Handmade classical acoustic I bought from a luthier in Nicaragua - 2006
Cheap Yamaha bass - brown - not sure when it was born

I also have a Gretsch Maple drum kit w/ Sabian cymbals.

I play 3-4 times per week & occasionally lead worship in my church men's group.

That said... I am not very good.

Nice set of guitars you got there. I think my next guitar is going to be a Taylor Big Baby. Every time I go into Guitar Center, I pick it up and the sound blows me away considering is only like $450.

Les Paul (epiphone, not Gibson)
Yamaha acoustic

I played every day for 2 years, and realized that i wasn't getting any better. In fact, I stink. So I gave it up and now they sit in my house collecting dust.

It never hits you just how insanely talented accomplished guitar players are until you actually try to do it yourself. And then when you watch guys like clapton, etc etc, I just shake my head.

Dean Razorback (explosion graphic)
Jackson DMKG (added emg 81/85 set and have had it painted)
Schecter Diamond Series Classic
BC Rich warlock (added EMG 81/85 set and have had it painted zebra style)
Squire Bass

Have not had a chance to play as much as I like as we are having some work done to the homestead right now and I don't play as much during the colder months.

If this was drums, I could do some gear justice. But I do still have two guitars.

A 1960's Ventura classical guitar, which is actually quite well made. The Venturas were ordered in batches from different manufacturers, so the quality varies wildly. I am going to donate this to the first friend's kid who gets interested in playing guitar.

And, a frankenstein guitar. A friend who was leaving town and getting rid of lots of stuff, started building guitars out of parts he had laying about, and selling them for $20. I ended up with a hollow body (hohner bass, iirc) guitar with one no name humbucker and one hagstrom single coil pickup. I keep it for visiting guitar players to marvel at/be horrified by.

The only guitar I played actively was a 1952-3 Magnatone lap steel. Great sound, especially when played with an ebow. That one I miss. Sold to pay for doggie medical bills.

Orignal (1980) Ibanez Destroyer. Love this guitar, even though it has trouble staying in tune at the G-string.

destroyer.jpg

A BC Rich Bich, NJ series :( Haven't really touched it in years.

And a Takamine EG-334SC Electric Acoustic. No Taylor, but a nice guitar.

I've been playing for almost 30 years and I do play every day at some point, even if I have to snatch a good 15 minutes to a half hour after work. It's therapeutic. :)

I used to play in some lousy metal band in the late 80's and went nowhere, just had fun in local clubs, then got tired of carrying my gear all over the state and just play at home everyday and jam with family once in a while.

Spit it out. Originally I wanted to play drums. I even took lessons and didn't even own a set! Later on when I was getting good enough to actually play, my mother couldn't afford the set of drums I wanted, so she bought me the Fender Squire II and a 30watt Crate amp for $149.

The rest was history.

Concerning your NJ Rich Bich. Depending on the year it was made, It could be worth a little coin now. Now not like classic gibbys or fenders but some of the older NJs are really gaining interest from BC Rich enthusiasts.

If it is one that was made in Nagoya Japan (NJ) and not newer ones that were later made in Korea or China. Those Nagoyas are really some good guitars.

Speaking of guitars. What amps / petals do you have?

I've got a Line6 Spider III 30 modeling amp (it sounds great) and a DigiTech RP355 guitar multi-effect processor. Bought it (the Digitech) as B-Stock at American Musical for $149. Came with a full warranty and has worked perfectly.

I had no idea and yeah it is one of the original NJ series made in Japan.
It might have degraded in value because I dropped it once and the neck cracked from the body. I got it fixed, but cosmetically you can see where it was fixed.

Thanks for the info, I doubt I'll be selling it, but it's worth it to look.

Wow, where do I start?

Taylor acoustic 422 (great sound)

Baby Taylor acoustic - (big sound for such a small guitar - good to carry if just tripping around in the mountains)

2010 Les Paul (like NYC's but mine is black silver burst)

Ibanez electric guitar

12 String Ibanez acoustic

Fender Prodigy electric

Ricardo Sanchis Carpio Blanco(white) - hand made flamenco guitar - (special ordered from Spain)

Vicente Carrillo Negro(European rosewood) - hand made flamenco guitar - (special ordered from Spain)

Hand made flamenco guitar (blanco) my child hood friend made for me - lives in AZ.

Francisco Navarro - hand made from Spain

(and what I mean by hand made is, for all these guitars I had to send an outline of my left hand on a piece of paper so that they could make the neck fit my hand better)

Pimentel Classical guitar - made in Albuquerque, NM

Savannah Mandolin

Fret Light guitar - http://www.fretlight.com/ - something like this but mine was ordered around 1993 or so...you can dial in chords, scales, in all kinds of keys...pretty cool to learn the keyboard. Mine is black and looks just like a Fender Strat.

Honer Harmonica in key of C

Honer Harmonica in key of A - for blues guitar in the key of E

I think that's all, not counting tamborines, bongo drums, flutes. Not going even try and list all the accessories, but I do use a Peavey Transtube 112 EFX (great sounding amp of you want a modern sound, or if you want a tube sound)

I practice at least 3 hours a day and might miss a day here and there. Every other Sunday during summer I sit in with a blues band called the Porch Pounders at a local pub. I do play flamenco guitar at weddings or parties, but traditional flamenco is not easily understood by most people unless you are from Spain, or just like Spanish guitar. I also got to play in the International Jazz Festival in New Orleans in the late 90's with a troupe called Alianza Flamenca.

I am not a pro guitar player, but I love entertaining people...and it's amazing how you can play something that is so elementary and people think you are so talented! I try and tell them, no I was not born this way...I just work my butt off to suck as bad as I do!

Sometimes they tell me, "Man, you sound good...you should be on the radio"!

I'm like, "Hey, thanks...really?"

They say, "Yeah, that way we could turn if off!":

But, all you other players...get that geetar out, love it, look at it, polish it, play it...even if it's just for 10 or 15 minutes a day. It needs you...that is what it's there for. You are already interested or you would not have a guitar in the first place.

And, don't try and be like Clapton or anyone else...do the thing that comes from your heart...it might sound like crap to you...but there are tons of people that can't even imagine that you can play any country song with just three chords. And, I love country, rock, blues, flamenco, classical, and almost all kinds of music...except...you guessed it, rap! Sorry my bros...but I love you too.

;)

Don't tell me I suck...see for yourself!

I have an old electric Yamaha.

I don't really play much - every couple days - to keep my fingers in playing shape just in case I feel like getting serious about it one day.

My alias is essentially a tribute to great guitar players:

Sultan = King.
Of = of (duh)
Six = reference to the six strings on a guitar

One of my favorite songs is Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits

There's no instrument that's not helped by having learned drums! :D

I started off in band with trumpet, then saxophone, but moved to drums. I had a Fibes 5 piece rock set, wish I had kept it, probably real collectable now. Severed ligaments in my right thumb, and ended up unable to keep a good grip on things. Left it all behind. About 15 years later I got the inspiration again and took up hand drumming.

I've got 3 '60's Gon Bop congas, an Oak LP conga, custom built Djembe and talking drum, 3 piece Jamaican Nyabingi drums , an old Ludwig 16 inch bass drum from a kids drumset (jazz guys keep trying to buy it), Zildjian 20 inch French orchestral cymbal pair (makes a nice ride) and a collection of slit/log drums and kalimbas, including a 30 inch tall Kalimbasso that sounds just like a string bass. Plus innumberable small percussion.

Got interested in synth drums, and later synthesizers. I still have my first, a Kawaii XD-5 percussion synth, as well as a Roland Jupiter 4, Ensonique ESQ and ESQm, Yamaha FS1r and TG500, Marion Prosynth, and Nord MiniModular.

For effects I really like the Line 6 stuff, but don't have any presently. BBE Sonic Maximizer and the Alesis Wedge are the ones I use the most now.

Many don't know this...I know you do. But a percussionist/drummer is the heart and soul of music...if you cannot keep a beat, then the rest that follows is just moving air.

Want to jam?

'74 Squire Strat, with two singles and a hum in the bridge.
Schechter Damien 6
Ibanez Performance Acoustic
Crate 12x2 120 watt club amp

I don't play as much as I'd like, and I'm definitely cyclical with it. I won't be able to put it down for a few months and then I won't touch it for 2 or 3 months.
I'm self taught (I'm a tab addict), and I love to bounce ideas and questions off players that are really good, even though I'm not very good at all. I love playing though.
I recently got a unit to hook up to the computer and record through Sonar, which has really opened my eyes as to how long it takes to put together a full song.
Anyway, I'm in the DFW metroplex, so if anybody out there wants to jam sometime let me know.

I have a Jackson Shark Fin. Its Zebra striped.
Its a Randy Rhoads student model. # 609 of 1900 circa 1983. Got it new in 1993. The first one was given to his mother Delores.

I recently treated myself to a 1993 Gibson Les Paul Studio. Cream Color with Gold accents.

I like them both for their own feel but I am a Jackson guy. The action is faster.
