So I'm thinking about trying to learn to play guitar. Specifically the electric guitar. The thing is, I don't have a guitar. I'm on a budget so I'll probably be looking around at pawn shops or ebay. I need some suggestions for what guitars I should be looking for in the $100-200 range. I understand that is not enough to get a good guitar, but I'd like to not get a piece of junk either.

Can't go wrong with a strat on a small budget. My advice to you is pick up some type of cheap starter kit. I've watched all my friends try and learn guitar, only to quit and get stuck with a $400-$500 dollar guitar.

It just takes a lot of patience and practice.

I've had good luck buying from Musicians Friend.com for my kids guitars/drums etc. They have some very good (scratch and dent) offers. I have probably made 20 purchases from them with fast shipping usually free over $99.00 and never a problem of any kind. I believe the first electric guitar I bought my oldest son was an Ibanez that he played the hell out of with no problems.

Start with a piece of junk and work your way up.
If all of the sudden you decide to quit, your loss will be minimal.
There are beginner packages that include a small amp and guitar for a decent price.

Start with a cheap acoustic. Your #1 goal at first is building up strength in your hand and the best way to do that is with an acoustic. It doesn't matter what brand, as long as it's cheap and stays in tune.

I agree. Acoustic is the way to go. Chicks dig it more too.

I also recommend going with an acoustic guitar as a starter. You can get a decent used one for under $200 and if you are serious about sticking with it, you actually learn how to play the guitar itself first without the embellishments that often come with an electric guitar.

Go with a kit they are medium guitars Ibanez makes a fairly cheap set with amp and guitar but for starting that is what you want because if you hate it you want be out a lot of money. Also check garage sales sometimes you can get lucky

Take lessons. I know here in Houston my son gets lessons for $20 for a 1/2 hour once a week so they should be pretty cheap. Try your small guitar stores vs the Big stores.

You need to decide on the kind of music you want to learn first. That is the key in how to pick a guitar.

Acoustic, electric, classical guitars, all play the same notes and chords but the music that comes out is all different.

If you want to learn electric guitar, then buy one...don't get an acoustic to learn on. But...if you are hearing an acoustic guitar on some music that you like and think it's an electric guitar then that is where you might go wrong.

Anyway, best of luck and one other piece of advice.

Use those two things on the side of your head...they are called ears and with the dedication and practice...be prepared to fall in love!
