I didn't see the game, but on JJ's long TD run he ran right up the middle behind Gurode. Gurode completely destroyed his man, by moving him off the line, turning him sideways, and completely walling off two DL during that run. If that was Rivera, JJ would have just ran into a wall of defenders at/behind the LOS. Could someone analyze Gurode's play during the game, and give us a better assessment of how he performed? I'd like to know if this play was an aberration, or did he perform this well throughout the game. I'd really be PO'd if he played this well, and all this time we've been putting up with Rivera mediocre play, when the better player was sitting on the bench!

seemed to play better than Rivera. Rivera has been playing pretty weak this year though. Maybe he sitll has a future.

I think he's a superior run blocker compared to Rivera. I'd definately like to get him some more playing time, unfortunately Rivera makes far too much money.

Gurode was drafted as a Guard (could also play center) and started first 6 games in 02 at center. Moved to guard upon return few weeks later & continued as a guard in 03 & 04 but benched in both years cause of mistakes, etc. Moved to center to compete against Johnson cause in TC Parcells apparently believed no way Gurode beats at Riveria at that time. During past week Parcells stated Gurode much more mature player now. Hope Gurode gets another chance next week against Rams so we can see if today's play was just a fluke. If he plays pretty well, I think he probably well at least be brought back next year for another look. Gurode has all the size/talent it was just his mental mistakes. He was highly regarded guard in 02 when we highly excited find him available in 2nd round.

I wonder how much Rivera's back has bother him this year. Not making excuses but that was a pretty serious back injury he suffered.

That'd be nice to actually have an offensive lineman from a draft finally pan out. Not saying that he will, but maybe it just took a little patience.

For whatever reason, we definately run better with him in there.

I truly believe Gurode is a better body in there.

He was in there last year when JJ went off.
He was in there today.
Coincidence?

Either way, JJ helped himself today because he got his step back.

It's so much easier to think the Coaching staff is clueless to the obvious.

:wink2:

I was thinking the same thing with regard to Rivera compared to Gurode. If you remeber, Gurode ws always a dominating blocker, but really struggled with the mental side of the game-something akin to the mental capacity of a bratwurst. Rivera is still a better guard-here's a thought: dumb Larry Allen and have both Rivera and Gurode. Allen still has flashes, but looks more and more like an underachiever when he stands by and watches his missed assignments drill Bledsoe into the ground. There's plenty of that to go around from either Tackle.

Also known as Premature Evaluation.

Yep..we have seen this on JJ, Barber himself earlier this season, Bradie James and Ware..just need to chill and let things develop..in time the true player is exposed.

I don't think the calls for Barber to play more was a knee jerk....almost everyone on this board, even the JJ supporters, eventually admitted that Barber was running better..we're not talking preseason or one game...through 14 games, Barber was clearly the more productive back...he made more first downs, good runs, blocks, receptions, you name it.

Today, for the first time all season, JJ was the man, and I'm sure no one called for Barber...JJ was the better back today, no contest, but that doesn't mean anyone was wrong for calling for more carries for Barber. It was nice to see last year's JJ return today, for whatever reason...I for one think it was something besides the ankle....he still looked crappy last week...high ankle sprains don't suddenly heal overnight, especially in a short week. I'd love to hear an interview with JJ about his performance.

I don't remember many people saying that overall and for the long term Barber was a better back than JJ.

Barber was more effective with our line play -or lack thereof - and JJ was clearly still not 100% confident in his cuts for a period of time. But not too many doubted at some point JJ would return to feature back status, be it this year or next.

ANd to be fair, we won't ever really know what Barber would have done with JJ's 34 carries today either. The line did a good job today run blocking.

Its a good situation to be in, either way.
