guys, im just wondering about something and wanted it clarified if you can, why in the world are the washington Commanders and tampa bay picking ahead of in the 1st round, since cleveland didnt make the playoffs.

i thought, the drafting order was non playoff teams first, then if you made the playoffs then you picked after the non playoffs teams, that to me is wrong, letting the stinking Commanders and tampa bay pick ahead of us, you just watch tampa bay will take felix jones, most likey, and washington may take another top cb, the one we really need, joe

It goes by record(with the Conference Champs the exception), strength of schedule for ties.

Because both of those teams suck.

Suck teams pick before non-suck teams.

Ergo, they pick before we do.:)

The draft order is determined by order of worst record. When teams are eliminated from the playoffs they return to their order in the draft according to their won - loss record but if teams that did not make the playoffs have an equal record they pick behind them. If they have a worse record than a non playoff team they pick ahead of them.

Tampa and Washington both had worse records at 9-7 than Cleveland did at 10-6. Therefore they pick before Cleveland. If either of them were also 10-6, Cleveland's pick would be before theirs. If both were 10-6, Cleveland's pick would be ahead of both.

Thanks Hos. Hows people haven't seen the thousands of posts on this subject, I'll never know. The ONLY exceptions to the regular season records are the 2 superbowl teams. Have a nice day! :D

It is a common misconception that the teams that miss the playoffs all pick ahead of the teams that make the playoffs. It's been around for a while.

It just seems that we have these discussions every year. For the last 4 years that I've been on this board, we have them and literally thousands of posts have been posted. I myself copy and pasted a rules article about it right off of NFL.com. Sigh.... I just can't understand how it would be missed. ??? :D

Here's as simple step-by-step explanation I can give:

1. The Super Bowl contestants pick 31 and 32.
2. Arrange the rest of the teams according to their record.
3. Among teams with identical records, arrange them first according to who went farther in the playoffs.
4. Among teams with identical records who went the same distance in the playoffs (or who didn't go to the playoffs), arrange them according to their opponent's strength of schedule.
5. Among teams with identical records who went the same distacne in the playoffs (or who didn't go to the playoofs) who also have the same strength of schedule, arrange them according to a coin flip conducted by the league.

On the positive side, no one asked why we played at Carolina again this year.
