Based on reading various reports, discussing with posters on this site, and using my own bias . . . .

Here are a couple of guys who make me nervous for the Cowboys at 27. (Of course, I don't have any inside knowledge, and I could easily be wrong - I'm no draft expert -but here it goes . . . . )

1. T Mays, S - I think if he's used in the box that he can be effective. However, given what we expect of our safties (i.e., increasing emphasis on coverage abilities), I don't think he'll be a good fit at FS or SS for us. Maybe a team like Cinn is a better fit? I don't want to insinuate he doesn't have talent . . . . but I think he's a poor fit for our defense.

2. B Campbell, OT - He could be great, but he's only got 17 starts and has had various injuries throughout college. I think he'll work out very, very well at the Combine. But I consider him a boom or bust type. Everything I've been reading on him seems to back that up.

3. T Cody, DT - In Round 1, I think it's a lot to risk. In Round 2, maybe you roll the dice. I just don't understand how a guy who is poised to make millions (let that just sink in for a bit), comes in at 370 lbs to a job audition. It's like going for a job interview wearing jeans, tennis shoes, and not bothering shaving. I know he's got incredible talent as a two down player, but who knows if he will have the commitment? Everyone wants to draft the next T Washington. I'm not sure Cody is that guy, however.

4. G Tate, WR - Again, this is a pick 27 call more than anything (not a talent level call). There remain questions on his speed and route running ability. Is he that much more effective than several of the Round 2-4 ranked wideouts? I think he can be a very good player, but does he have number 1 wideout potential? I'd love to get feedback from posters on this board concerning Tate. Again, I'm not saying he isn't a talented player, but is he significantly better than guys currently ranked 2-3 rounds below him?

Anyway, the guys I listed above are regarded as Round 1 types on various mock drafts.

And I want to stress that this is based on my very unprofessional scouting eyes. But these are my initial opinions that I've formed.

Nice list. I have issues (right now at least) with all of them at 27 too, but I am curious about Mays.

I can't think of other "consensus" Round 1 picks who I have concerns with at the moment . . . . at least guys who the Cowboys may have interest in . . . .

Tate reminds me of Steve Smith of the Panthers. I think he holds very good value at the end of the 1st. I'm not sure if he could turn into a true #1 but he can make a lot of plays and help in the KR/PR game.

and the giants got steve smith in the 2nd, if i remember correctly.

i think that's where tate also has value. imo, if i take a wr in the 1st, i want to project him as a potential number 1 down the line. i'm just not sure tate is projected to even eventually be a true number 1.

with respect to the giants, i can however see where nicks will eventually be a true number 1 wideout. i think the giants did it the right way around.

that said, i think tate does have a lot of skills, but i wouldn't spend a 1st on him. but that's just me . . . .

carolina got smith in the 3rd, and I think he wont be a number 1 on this team, but he can on many others.

I'd love if we got Tate at the bottom of the 1st btw, he's not the greatest kr/pr but hes a real good deep threat.

He's referring to perennial Pro-Bowler Steve Smith of the Panthers--one of the leagues best of the past decade. He was an epic steal in the 3rd round due to his size. But you may have a point by comparing Tate to the other Steve Smith...as far as draft position.
