Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware comments on Cowboys DC change
By Clark Dalton | Last updated 5/29/24

Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware indicated players must prepare for a complete culture shift under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

Ware played for Zimmer from 2005-06 in his first stint as Cowboys DC. During a Tuesday episode of "The Doomsday Podcast," the Hall of Famer admitted Zimmer is intense, but his passion for the game could be what the Cowboys need.

"With Zimmer, the atmosphere of the Cowboys is going to change," Ware said. "We're not playing pool, we're not playing arcade games, we're not getting haircuts; we're studying film, and everybody is in there at the same time. We might have a donut from time to time, but it's all about football when it comes to Zimmer."

Yeah people have to buy into all of this, someone won't like this way!!!!!! It'll be a big named star, but what are you going to do bench him?

I don't care if they like him or hate him.
They must play hard as a unit or it won't work.
The entire team needs a combination of grit and focus. Zimmer is the type of coach who can instill that level of determination within players.

The question is whether they will buy in completely with what Zimmer is selling. If so, I believe the defense is capable of both playing as a unit and for four quarters a game. If not, it will be just another coach pulling just enough out of his players to be inconsistently good enough.

This is what I want to hear, discipline and toughness. I don't want Parsons in the 4th quarter of a blowout win to run up his stats only to fade later in the year, like Quinn and McCarthy always did.

This ....... Jerry needs to lock his office and let the coaches coach.

I am still in favor of that $250 million dollar yacht losing all power in the middle of the Pacific. It would be more gravy if he locks his office door onboard too.

I was one of the few that actually liked Zimmer when he was here the first time.
I'm just concerned that today's players have changed as a whole, and it's gonna be tough if he comes in as a total disciplinarian.
Because if you only have seven or eight guys leaving their guts on the field, it's still not gonna work.
But I am hoping for the best.

A lot has changed in 20 years, not sure today’s players will get on board with the old school approach. It will be interesting to watch.

I hope Ware is right.
Zimmer has primarily coached defenses either in the top 10 in the league or middle of the pack. His defense in Cincy was 12th, 4th, 15th, 7th, 6th and 3rd. In Minnesota, it was 14th, 13th, 3rd, 1st, 4th, 14th, 27th and 30th. Like with McCarthy in Green Bay, the last two years were an aberration.

Zimmer hasn't exactly been out of coaching the last 20 years. He was coaching some pretty good defenses during that time with his old-school approach.

Recall who was the HC back then...Bill Parcells.
I read a few stories about the team and its culture in the early 2000s -- under Dave Campo.
Practices didn’t begin until midmorning; players were hanging out before and afterwards...playing card games and dominoes; and wasn't there a pool table in the locker room?
When the Tuna arrived - practices started early morning = before 9am, players needing treatment to rehab from injuries had to be at the facility at least an hour before..and recreational activities or goings on that had nothing to do with football stopped.
