Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware comments on Cowboys DC change
By Clark Dalton | Last updated 5/29/24

Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware indicated players must prepare for a complete culture shift under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

Ware played for Zimmer from 2005-06 in his first stint as Cowboys DC. During a Tuesday episode of "The Doomsday Podcast," the Hall of Famer admitted Zimmer is intense, but his passion for the game could be what the Cowboys need.

"With Zimmer, the atmosphere of the Cowboys is going to change," Ware said. "We're not playing pool, we're not playing arcade games, we're not getting haircuts; we're studying film, and everybody is in there at the same time. We might have a donut from time to time, but it's all about football when it comes to Zimmer."

I certainly like the idea of Zimmer and his defensive staff bringing a harder, more focused edge to the practice field, meetings, etc. Lord knows these players need it.

Culture is a very underrated part of any team’s success whether it be in sports or any other organization where people have to work together and be accountable for results.

The hardest part about changing and improving the Cowboys culture however is the part that is untouchable for accountability. Without accountability at the very top, there can be no accountability anywhere else in the organization. And that right there is the cancer that remains untreatable because of the owner.

I feel for guys like Zimmer who want to hold players accountable for excellence as all good coaches should. But it’s very tough to do that when the old man owner and his kids are models of entitlement without any level of accountability for failure.

If the defense increases intensity, that usually inspires the offense to pick up the pace. It will be fun watching what the team looks like this fall.

Yeah people have to buy into all of this, someone won't like this way!!!!!! It'll be a big named star, but what are you going to do bench him?
If Micah refuses to get on board the disciplined bus and be a leader, Cowboys should start shopping him around for several 1st round picks. Micah should have shown up to OTAs last week in order to start picking up the new defense and start getting acclimated to Coach Zimmer. A very bad look Micah showed not showing up.

sucks that we need all of these people to vouch for what kind of coach he is
Although I would've loved to have seen Rex in that position, as a1-year gig, Zimmer really is a strong hire. I can't think of a more tenured and accomplished duo than McCarthy and Zim as OC/DC. Zimmer is a strong counter balance to McCarthy's more laid back approach. It should help with discipline in the locker room, and on the field.

His teams in Minnesota weren't always the best, but much like the entirety of his career, his defenses brought it, consistently in the top ten. He's an excellent defensive mind and playcaller. IF, by some miracle DT manages to work itself out and become serviceable, Zim has more talent to work with than any other point in his career. This unit could end up being really, really good...if not great. That's a massive IF.

Recall who was the HC back then...Bill Parcells.
I read a few stories about the team and its culture in the early 2000s -- under Dave Campo.
Practices didn’t begin until midmorning; players were hanging out before and afterwards...playing card games and dominoes; and wasn't there a pool table in the locker room?
When the Tuna arrived - practices started early morning = before 9am, players needing treatment to rehab from injuries had to be at the facility at least an hour before..and recreational activities or goings on that had nothing to do with football stopped.
I remember one of the first things Parcells did was ban dominoes from the locker room. Emmitt Smith was mad and then Emmitt Smith played for the Cardinals.

We need another Parcells in here. The coddling has created a mentally weak team.

When it comes to expectations and toughness, Zimm is cut from the same cloth as Bill Parcells. They will either join his message or revolt.

The question is whether they will buy in completely with what Zimmer is selling. If so, I believe the defense is capable of both playing as a unit and for four quarters a game. If not, it will be just another coach pulling just enough out of his players to be inconsistently good enough.
Bingo! Selling your scheme with a one-year contract won't be easy, especially with a demanding coach like Zim. I mean some players learn faster than others and some don't. Some players players play well under fear and some don't. Zim's biggest challenge is time is not on his side but I am sure MM will keep an eye on it........

I agree but it's hard with a lame duck coach. It is one of the main reasons MOST owners will allow a head coach to coach the final year of his contract. They will fire him before the final year or tack on an artificial year to his deal.

He will be fine. There are no worries with him. Coaches and players know the game and when guys don't show up for OTA's it's not a big deal.
