It's totally about the contract. He's been franchised & hasn't signed a contract with us so he's not attending the OTAs; don't know if he'll be at the June minicamp either--which is only 2 weeks away.

Franchised players usually don't come to OTAs -- Canty is doing a good thing showing up but he's got less leverage as RFAs usually end up playing for their tenders anyway.

I think the big difference here is that Canty is likely to go into the season with the tendered amount as his contract. Hamlin is likely to sit out until he gets a new deal (or until the team can start fineing him for being gone).

This isn't unusual for a tagged player to not show up until they get their contract.

I believe Hamlin's on the record saying he'll play for the tender this season, isn't he? I don't think there's really any reason why Hamlin can't be with the team right now.

Canty deserves a lot more credit than he's getting for showing up and playing. He's a man, and I hope Jerry bellies up to the table and gets a deal done for him sooner as a result.

i'd have to agree. the only downer is if hamlin were to get injured in an OTA, what would he get for $? if not much, i'd have to weigh my options also. it would suck majorly to be at a "walk through" practice, blow out a knee and not even get the franchise deal for that year.

That's the issue right there.

Business decision and nothing more

Don't teams offer insurance for players not technically under contract in these situations? I think they have short-term insurance products available to replace any potential lost income. I might be making that up, though, or the team might not care enough to bother offering it for an OTA (assuming the player in question is not named Roy Williams).
