We've got a couple Pro Bowlers at the American Airlines Center for tonight's Kings-Mavericks game. T.O. and Ken Hamlin are sitting in the second row.
I chatted with Hamlin, who got the franchise tag, for a couple minutes at halftime. He said he wants to get a long-term deal done with the Cowboys, but he isn't sure one will get done in the near future.
"I look at it as, I'm waiting my turn," said Hamlin, who is fresh off his first Pro Bowl appearance. "There are some things that are going on, but we're going to see what happens. I don't know for sure.
"I want a long-term deal. I'm definitely looking forward to it. We'll see what happens."
Didn't get a chance to chat with T.O., who had his cellphone glued to his ear. Will try to talk to him about the possibility of a contract extension later.

Glad to see he wants to stay for awhile. Hopefully we can get a reasonable deal worked out.

I want to see Hamlin play for another year before I give him anything. I think he is an average player.

Is there a deadline to sign franchised players to a long term deal, or can you doo it anytime?

July 15th I believe. After that they have to play on their franchise numbers.

Understand that with the Ferguson trade and the cap money we saved from it, we got about $4M cap money left but will need about $5M for the rookie draft pool. Wonder where Jerry will find the money for that as well as re-signing TO & MBIII? And will we sign Hamlin to a long contract or is the money simply not that.

So far I've heard some talk about restructuring Romo's contract so his hit goes from about $8M down to about $2.5M -- maybe less. That's probably what the Cowboys counting on but suspect Jerry wants to see what kind of deal gets done with TO, etc.

other lesser safeties are averaging 6 million in the open market. i really wonder what it will take to sign hamlin to a long term deal.

on a positive side, this might make roy williams' contract look like a bargain, thus the haters won't hate him as much.

Adam has repeatedly said we don't need $5mm for the rookie draft pool.

It's closer to $2.5mm or so. It's mentioned on several of the other posts.

JJ can't go crazy in FA, but he has the ability to make a couple of moves to improve the roster. My guess is that he will wait until the intial crazy money is spent and prices come down a bit, which should happen pretty soon.

If Hamlin resigns (along with Barber), their cap numbers will actually be reduced since the first year of a long term deal won't be over $4 for Hamlin or $2.5 for Barber (possibly).

is anyone concerned that we are devoting a huge chunk of the cap to our secondary?

hamlin

the safety position should never command so much money. i'm hoping we can let hamlin go after this year. watkins and brown must step up.

i think we are spending too much in the wrong place.

You are not going to get him to sign anything less then a 4 year deal. And if you do not sign him this year he will be so pissed that there is no way he will
stay. So we either get it done by July 15 or he is gone. for 3 years we desperately searched for a replacement for Woody and some of you GOMERS think its going to be so easy to find better.

People WAKE UP. The NFL is NOW a passing league. If you do not have an insane rush- and that will not always be there= the Giants had a real good rush all year but only a great one for about 3 games= you MUST have a real good secondary. That is the place anymore to SPEND money on D.
