I don't drink because I come from a family where alcoholism is very real and very debilitating. I've never had one and won't ever have one. I know people who brag about them and how drunk they were. I don't get it.
Drinking is okay by me - especially good red wine.
However, I really dislike being drunk. If I don't get drunk, I don't get hangovers. I limit myself to two or three drinks at most and then drink something else.
I'll explain quickly two of the issues with alcohol: the peeing and the dizziness.
The excess urination is due to the inhibition of a horome called anti-diuretic hormone (ADH). Diuretics make you urinate. So ADH does the opposite. Since it is decreased when you are intoxicated, you urinate alot. This leads to dehydration and alteration in the salt levels of your blood (due to you peeing out an excess amount of your water).
The other effect is the dizziness. The inner-ear centers are important for balance and when they are off you can experience dizziness. There are two types of fluid in your ear and they absorb alcohol with different rates. The change in the relative densities of the two fluids while you get intoxicated makes you dizzy. Now, later the next day as the alcohol comes out of the two fluids it also does so at different rates and causes a change in density again which is why you are often dizzy the next morning.
As for post-drinking munchies, I've always like a couple of junior whoppers.
