They sure did for tens of thousands of years. What doomed the natives was their refusal to become on. Instead, it was a continent of hundreds of tribes constantly fighting with each other to the end until another huge group of people from another continent arrived and overpowered the constantly divided natives.
We can and should be a country of 1 if the constant decentors quit their crap and instead fully assimilate.
