Happy Birthday Chuck Howley

How Are New Enshrinees Selected?

Any fan may nominate any player, coach or contributor who has been connected with pro football simply by writing to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

https://www.profootballhof.com/heroes-of-the-game/selection-process-faq/

For those who do not know, the Hall's mailing address is:

Pro Football Hall of Fame
2121 George Halas Dr NW
Canton, OH 44708

I think fans should write the Hall whenever they have the time and opportunity at some point during any given year. It is tough enough getting the Board of Selectors to discuss and debate deserving players who should be considered for enshrinement each year. I am almost certain most Selectors do not give a rat's buttocks if they do not receive (significant quantity of) written proof of fans' desire in seeing legends like Howley be enshrined.

Sure, it is snail mail and licking a stamp or two can be a bother but participating can make a real difference in cases like these.

Each year in the regular Hall of Fame voting, a player has to make the preliminary list, then the semi-final list, then the final list, then be one of the seven players who get voted in. Howley was probably a better LB than any of these Hall of Famers, and he never made it past the preliminary list in the voting.

Greene: 2 AP All-Pro, 0 rings
Robinson: 1 AP All-Pro, 2 rings
Jackson: 0 AP All-Pro, 0 rings
Tippett: 2 AP All-Pro, 0 rings
Wilcox: 2 AP All-Pro, 0 rings
Howley: 5 AP All-Pro, 1 ring + SBMVP in a loss, all-time leader in SB takeaways

Everyone (coaches, players, media) considered Howley the best weak side LB during the time he kept making those All-Pro teams. He is the only eligible player who made at least 5 Pro Bowls, was a Super Bowl MVP, and is NOT in the Hall of Fame. You could make a case that he's the most underrated NFL player ever.

We were just talking about Chuck Howley in another post as the only player to fail the wonderlic test and wonderlic position test but still get signed by the Cowboys during the Landry years.

He was the first to make 54 a famous Cowboys number.

I believe Howley was traded to the Cowboys from the Bears.

Spot on regarding Chuck Howley. His resume for the HOF clearly shows how big of an injustice his omission is.Coach Landry basically created the "Weak Side"LB position for Howley and put Dave Edwards at "Strong Side" due to how versatile and athletic Howley was.

A player who excelled in both pass defense and run defense.Durable and played outstanding in the Post Season.Simply put,the best LB in the History of the Dallas Cowboys.

Happy Belated Birthday, Mr. Chuck Howley!

The original Cowboys #54!

#54 Chuck Howley - Linebacker 1961-1973 He was selected to six Pro Bowls and earned six All-Pro selections in a row, enough to become the fourth player in franchise history inducted into the Ring of Honor (1976).

HE NEEDS TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE HALL OF FAME! LONG OVERDUE!

A person or persons responsible for dallascowboys.com should be alien probed with a 2X4.

Inspired by @percyhoward , I decided to 'spice up' this year's batch of letters to the PFHOF Board of Selectors with some in-depth stats,, etc. instead of a summary I usually come up with for why I think Cowboy greats should be enshrined in the Hall. Surfed over to DC for their info on Howley to start with.

It is a nicely written and concise biography. Click here if you want to check it out.

Wish I could say the same for the photo someone used for Howley's biography
