I don't even know how many reps Armstrong is even gonna get.

I expect Sam Williams to be a big part of things early....but even if he isnt, Armstrong would figure to be behind Fowler and maybe Basham for RDE snaps.

That alone makes the salary curious. Not like I ain't rooting for him, but I failed to see anything special at all about him in four years.
You’re probably not reading into it the same as the team.

Fowler and Basham are under contract for one year, both of those players are probably the most expendable when you look at the contracts in the DE room. Both are pass rushers first as well, to me it seems like Basham and Fowler are fighting for that pass rush slot.

Williams is a rookie. Rookie defensive lineman rarely come out of the gates fast as it takes some time. The plan is definitely for Sam to be a starter eventually, but going into the season I doubt he will be the starting RDE.

Armstrong is a strong run defender who can provide some pass rush as well. To me he’s the surest thing outside of DLaw, not the best but the surest. You know you’re gonna get a guy who sets the edge and has the ability to create pressure. He’s the all-around solid guy while the others outside of Law have holes, whether it be rush defense or youth.

Dorance will likely be the week 1 starter at RDE with Fowler/Basham and Williams being DPR’s mostly. By the time his contract is up in two years, they hope to have Williams take over the role completely.

As a baseline, I don’t mind this plan. If Sam Williams and Fowler/Basham provide us with 12 sacks combined between whichever two get pass rush snaps then we are moving. Sam should be the starter by next season if all goes well.

how is it a massive over pay? Good thing we did not get Gregory signed his number were no better than raked in 10 mill a year deal. Oh I forgot Gregory has potential, never has lived up to it but he has it. lol
Never mentioned Randy in my comment.
My comment was about Armstrong.
We overpaid for a career backup DE.
We overpayed Armstrong and most on this board agree with that opinion.
Go back and check the thread from when he resigned.
I respect your opinion, we just disagree.

Even funnier that only now can you admit that.

I admitted earlier than now. I actually wanted Gregory resigned and felt Cowboys offer was more than generous, he seemed to have an issue because of the clauses in the contract which he also earned.

in my view 6 mill in todays NFL is not overpaying . You say he is a career back up yet played 56% of the snaps on defense while Gregory took 55% of the defensive snaps.

My point was he was a rotation player.
He has been average.
I would rather we paid his money plus some more to an above average DE free agent.
But this front office overpays their own free agents and is allergic to signing above average free agents.
It is just crazy to me.

You wanted to pay 14 million a year long term for someone with Dorance Armstrong type production?

Can you say Go Cowboys!?

Evidently Denver did.

And what's that mean? 30 other teams didn't. Own your own. You wanted to pay Gregory 14 million a year long term for 16.5 sacks and 19 TFLs over 7 years in the league. 4.5 of which he wasn't suspended.

You are quite easily impressed. Simply put a star on his hat.

No given today pay for players, this is not 2006 and team around the league over pay, personally I think it is outrageous what players get paid but it is the rate that players are getting paid.

Still irritates me that they handed this guy 6.5 million a year when they are so frugal otherwise.

And a clear panic move nonetheless.

Overall I'm fine with shedding the underperforming contracts.....but then turn around and do that??
BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes the old i think he will be good this year because i believe in rainbows and magic but no actual substance.

He would never start on any other team. 2.5 of his sacks were in blowouts where he played the majority of snaps and the team dropped back to pass every play.

If you watch him play hes a backup de and that is it. 25-30% snaps guy. Front office fumbled gregory so here we are. Gregory was a much better player.

Armstrong is definitely a rotational player, but I think the Cowboys still lucked out on Gregory. He was productive with the snaps he played mid-season but he only played 38% of snaps for the whole season. Hard to justify paying a big contract to an unreliable player that's frequently unavailable.
