Happy birthday Mazi Smith

This will be a breakout season for him .........buying or selling?

We will see what happens, but it's interesting that coaches passed on adding another high-level DT from a draft that was loaded for picking. That's quite a bit of confidence in Mazi.

One encouraging stat is 24th in solo tackles among 219 DIs

I mean, he played better last year. Fans just don't see the stats, so they think he's bad.

Did he play to the level of a first rounder?

No, but he got better. If Mazi was a 4th rounder even a 3rd, people would talk a about him as a developing player we hope can develop more.

But people act like he's a complete bust, which isn't accurate. He's been decent. Just not good or great. Decent.

I mean he did improve, but it was from nearly unplayable to bottom tier interior player. Its kinda like saying Quincy Carter wasnt a bust because his QB rating did technically increase from year 1 to year 2. He still struggled to complete more than half his passes and threw more INTs than TDs, but he still showed improvement.

This is true but as mentioned above, it's encouraging that he finished he season 24th/219 run stops among DI's. But I agree, his bar was so low, he still has a ways to go.

Not saying you're wrong, but where is that stat coming from? I've not seen him ranked that high at all.

I bet Mazi can still jump those stairs like there is no tomorrow.
That’s what I’ve always had rounded figuring out. The guy is an athletic freak but doesn’t translate to the field. He’s so slow off the snap he’s always in the hole right away. With his athleticism you’d think he would be a bit quicker off the snap

if you've improved but no one noticed, did you really improve?

I mean, a lot of our fans wouldn't notice much either way. Not many go back to verify what they're saying. They're just saying it because someone else said it.

Quincy wasn't a bust until he started smoking friggin crack, which he says was MJ.

He actually got a pretty marginal team into the playoffs. He just got cracked out and BP couldn't trust him. So along came Romo, who pretty much nobody saw coming. Even when he arrived, there were still mostly doubters.

But back to Mazi. You watch his college tape and he was always going to be a project. Much like Guyton.

I totally agree. If he was a later pick he would be judged differently. To me he never was a first rnd pick but if he can improve again this year he can play in this league. If he can just get quicker off the snap he could probably be a solid player

That's right. I just think that, as well as his lack of balance, will keep him from ever being a first round talent. In spite of his flaws, he can be decent to solid, which is what we need from him. We need him to take a step in the run game.
