Clutch clutch clutch and a phenomenal scrambler too! He could have still played, Landry was kind of cold to him coming back so he said F this and retired. Mr Navy and Mr Cowboy Roger the Dodger Staubach.
absolutely wrong. Having watched the press conference, and the way he talked about later, he retired because he was accumulating concussions and was worried about it. Landry talked to him the day before, trying to change his mind. After all, Roger had a career high that previous year in TDs and Yards. But Landry understood where Roger was coming from.

When we were kids, so many of us imitated that Roger pump fake (Hail Mary Play) on all our backyard deep balls. Was always the same, we looked to one side, did the Roger pump, crow hop, and then heaved it for all we were worth. I for one thought the pump set the sequence in motion for me to really get it out there, plus, and maybe more importantly to a dumb kid, I thought I looked cool - like Roger! I’m sure I looked like a moose on ice but when I’d get lucky and connect on one, I was Captain America. At least until mom told me to get my *** in the house for dinner.

Staubach would dominate in today's NFL. Already has the athletic skills like most modern QBs, protected much more than 70's QBs, and of course has that same arm and clutch play. Love Aikman, but I'm not sure the Cowboys will ever have a better QB than Staubach ever again.

Absolutely not Wrong! Staubach even mentions it in his book that Landry made little attempt to change his mind, If he had he would have seriously considered staying. Staubach mentions in several of his interviews that Landry did not push for him to stay at all. He had Danny White waiting in the wings and felt quite hood about him As he had been around awhile and knew the offense inside out.

I think Rogers comments at the time are more realistic but hey he did write the book.
Funny enough not too many years ago Roger said in an interview that the concussions were worrying him.
In this case I believe Landry despite his reputation for being cold and hard did understand and did not try and push Roger to return. I mean really, after what Roger had accomplished as a QB, you are happy for him to go so a new guy who has not proven anything can take over? Tell me from a cold calculating point of view that it makes sense.

Just providing some of Rogers feedback at the time. Yes I’m sure Landry would have liked if he stuck around but he also did not seem the type to try to convince him otherwise. I believe that Landry had enough confidence in himself to have felt that he could go it alone. He also was very comfortable with Danny White being next in line. This is not at all much different from the split that we saw from Brady and Belicheck as Belicheck thought for sure that he could do it alone. What u have said is true but what I have said also has some truth to it as well.

I met him while he was at the Naval Academy. My uncle played on that team. He is Captain America to me. It was meeting him that made me want to be a football player, and I achieved that goal, at least in college. Earned a scholarship to Rutgers and played for four years. His inspiration helped to lead me to the good life I live today. He is the Greatest Cowboy, bar none.
