Coach was born Sep 11, 1924 and would have been 89 years old today. He holds the record for most seasons as the coach of one team at 29 and a record 20 consecutive winning seasons. The Cowboys were in 12 NFL or NFL Championship games from 1966-82 and 10 NFCC games from 1970-82.

Landry was the first to use the 4-3 as its still used today with the Mike, invented the Flex, brought the use of keys to the fore, and brought the Shotgun back to life among his accomplishments. His first Mike was none other than Sam Huff who credits Landry for getting his HOF career started. Huff was drafted in 1956 and got so discouraged he left camp. Vince Lombardi caught him at the airport and brought him back. Then Tom built a new 4-3 defense around Huff and here we are today with all the variations of the 4-3 and Sam Huff in the HOF with Mr. Landry.

I won't bore you with more. I never met Tom Landry but knew someone who looked up to him like no other. He was a gracious family man who was also one of if not the greatest coach the NFL has ever had.

Happy Birthday Mr. Landry.

Happy Birthday, Coach Landry.

I'll never forget what a proud teenager I was watching the man with the funny hat on the Cowboys sideline. In his last days he was gravely ill. I remember following the news, waiting for the announcement I most dreaded. On the night of February 12, 2000 my sister came into my room and said "Tom Landry died?" It was in the form of a question, but I was too speechless to answer. I was such a big fan that she assumed that I already knew. I played it off on the outside, but I was devastated on the inside. Landry touched so many lives. He was everything that was right in a man. They don't make 'em like that anymore. I am eternally grateful he was coach of my Dallas Cowboys.

Thanks for the post -- it's the kind of thing Hos used to do and it's importantfor the younger fans to have an appreciation of our history and especially Coach Landry.
