If Meredith had signed with a good team when he came out of college he could have been one of the all-time greats. He had it all: great arm, leadership, intelligence, mobility, and was as tough as any QB I've ever seen play the game.

He hurt his leg in the mid 60s and was never quite the same again and after the debacle against the Browns in the 1968 playoffs, he retired before his time. I am convinced that if he would have played another 3-4 years we could have won our first SB before 1971.

I loved "Dandy Don" on MNF and the constant banter between him and Cosell is what made it great. The networks have been trying to duplicate that chemistry ever since but have failed miserably.

There is a player I would love to meet. Just to listen to him tell stories about the Cowboys would be incredible. Eddie LaBaron told me at the card show that he roomed with Meredith and it was always interesting...

Walt Garrison telsl a great story about Meredith in his book Once a Cowboy. The plane they were on had a mechanical problem and they thought they were going to crash. Bob Lilly was supposedly losing it. He had drank a lot of beer and his empty cans were flying everywhere. Pete Gent in a panic turned to Don Meredith and said "we're going to die."

Walt said Meredith took a long drag on his cigarette and a long pull on his beer and said, "well, it's been a good one ain't it?"

Frank Gifford never played for the Cowboys.

Don Meredith has always been my favorite Cowboy! He was a terrfic quarterback and a great personality. I loved watching him drink his Dr. Pepper and smoke a cigarette after a game in the locker room. He also did not take the game to be more important than it really was. Heck, he often forgot the down and once lined up behind the guard. He was sometimes exasperating but always entertaining. His relationship with Landry was interesting as well.

I loved the way Dandy Don had a way of making OJ Simpson look stupid on MNF. Of course, that wasn't the hardest thing to do, but I enjoyed watching it. Happy Birthday Don Meredith. Too bad you aren't more active with the Cowboys today.
