Happy seems like a strange word to apply to a day of remembrance but I am happy we've had such brave men and women to stand for their country when she calls.
And it doesn't matter whether that call is for a "popular war" like Desert Storm or an unpopular one like Korea or Vietnam, they still answered the call and risked everything.
The times have been dark and divided in our country recently and it is easy to get caught up in what is wrong with our country but what is right with it outweighs that. They are what's right because in their hearts they fought for what is right.
While you are celebrating this day, set aside a few moments and just think about what it took for 18-20 year old boys, and some younger in WW I and II, who had to turn into men almost overnight, to charge a pillbox or a hedgerow or be in a battle at sea or in the air or enter a jungle strange to them but home to the enemy or wear full packs in 120 degree heat while not knowing just who the enemy was.
Happy Memorial Day to you and your families.
