I admit, I don't think about this a lot, but when I do, I feel great respect for those that serve and sacrifice. One of my feeder school as a coach was named after Audie Murphy. I had to look him up and was amazed!!!

True, but there's nothing wrong with thanking vets while they're alive to appreciate it. Though, in the spirit of your observation, maybe it would be better to phrase those thanks as an addendum.

On this day, our grateful nation sets aside time to remember the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women to establish our country and keep it free. May we never forget freedom is not free.

To all those who gave their lives for this country I wish them peace in heaven. My heart goes out to their families. Let us never forget the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

A special thanks to my parent's generation. The courage and backbone they had to storm the beaches of Normandy, Saipan and the many islands of the Pacific will never be surpassed. I was lucky my Dad made it home, but so many others didn't.
