“HARD KNOCKS” IN THE REGULAR SEASON?
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 5, 2008, 8:44 a.m. EDT
HBO and NFL Films are teaming up during the Cowboys’ training camp to produce another installment of Hard Knocks, the documentary-style show that takes an inside look at the players, the coaches, and, in the Cowboys’ case, the owner.
And that owner, Jerry Jones, likes the show so much that he would consider doing it in the regular season as well, HBO Sport president Ross Greenburg said.
“[Jones] opened the door in a conference call last Friday to doing [a series on] the Cowboys during the regular season,” Greenburg said. “Can you imagine? That’s a dream we’ve always had, so maybe someday that will happen as well.”
We all know that Jones loves publicity for himself and his team, but would a team really be willing to deal with the potential distractions of having a camera crew follow its every move during the regular season? Or have teams become so accustomed to media scrutiny that it’s really no distraction at all?
It seems unlikely that any NFL team would offer the kind of access during the fall that the teams that have done Hard Knocks have offered during the summer. But if there’s an NFL owner who would allow it, it’s Jones.
The first episode of this season’s Hard Knocks airs Wednesday night on HBO.
