Hard realities

Homer glasses are worse than beer goggles. After that resounding win over the gnats last week somebody said our window was open till 2027. The most delusional post I have ever read and that is saying something.

Watching the Game Day thread yesterday, the only thing that surprised me was the number of fans that seemed genuinely shocked at how bad our defense played. The screams for Matt Eberflus’ head is understandable but would solve 0% of our problems. Because this defense is really, really bad.

So here’s our first hard reality: This defense does not have much talent. A “better” scheme and a 4th new defensive coordinator in 21 months will not solve our problems.

In the 2023 season, our last season with realistic playoff hopes, 3 of our best defenders on that team are no longer on this team. And 3 others are currently hurt. And that 2023 defense was not great to begin with.
  • Micah Parsons - best talent we’ve had on defense in two decades. Traded to GB. Predictably tearing it up in GB.
  • Demarcus Lawrence - one of the most underrated Cowboys in recent years, was lost in FA to Seattle. (Too many fans here only looked at sack numbers) DLaw was a real talent who has already made an impact in Sea.
  • Jourdan Lewis - a real leader and underrated talent, lost in FA to the Jags. Has two picks in 3 games.
The above players weren’t enough to make our defense good enough in the playoffs as we saw in the horrible GB playoff disaster. But the guys who have replaced the above better players we had are all a major step down.

And most of the other talent we have on D now is hurt. Trevon Diggs isn’t right, Deron Bland has a bad foot, and DeMarvion Overshown - who knows if he will ever be the same. Osa Odighizhua is a complimentary piece that will never be dominant without help, and Kenny Clark is clearly not the same guy he once was.

The second hard reality I have accepted and it’s the hardest to overcome: A complete lack of front office cohesiveness beyond how to market this team. Someone was quoted on Twitter last night saying, “The Dallas Cowboys are the Jacksonville Jaguars with better marketing.”And that’s not fair to the Jags. They have been to two conference championship games in the last 30 years.

The hard reality is this is not a roster with enough talent to be a playoff team. It can improve but not much IMO. Losing a lot of games this year is sadly in our team’s best interest.

One final question: Do you have faith that our front office knows how to rebuild? I wish I did but I don’t. We fans are just going to have to play the long game in hopes that real changes will happen at some point. It doesn’t take much football insight to know our FO is clueless when it comes to building a playoff roster.
Quick question:

Is Micah really “tearing it up” in Green Bay?

I didn’t hear too much from him vs Cleveland yesterday in their loss.

And three games in, his individual stats are OK, but nothing I’m overly impressed about.

Of course he’ll destroy this bunch next Sunday.

Pretty sure he was leading the league in QB pressures going into that game in Cle yesterday. And I didn’t see any of the that game.

But in the two previous packers games I watched a lot of the games and he was extremely disruptive. He didn’t always get the sack but he was clearly making the QB uncomfortable.

Our only hope this year is to get a top 5 pick and get our QB of the future since this is a very good QB class

Then hope that GB loses as many games as possible so at least we get a pick in low 20s

This year is lost
Dak is not the problem right now.

Do we need a QB? YES, but it doesn't need to happen in 2026. It can wait until 2027 if needed.

What we do need is a big do everything middle LB, stud do everything DE, stud RIght Tackle and a big/fast Safety who can tackle and cover/make interceptions. Those are our biggest concerns for next year's draft.

The worst thing to happen to this team was Dak getting to face a pathetically weak pass defense schedule in 2023, statistically the 32nd worst pass defense DVOA.

Kudos to Dak for taking advantage of that going into a contract year and getting bridesmaid honors for MVP and All Pro, but it was a mirage, and many of us were screaming it from the rooftops, but got ridiculed for it.

Dak, aside from yesterday, has not played poorly, but he hasn't played well enough to cover the warts that his contract has caused. And he's not going to all of a sudden get better.
Nobody could play the QB position on this team and cover the warts....well, maybe Patty, but outside of him?

Dak was not good yesterday. And yes he’s overpaid.(Who made that decision to pay him?) But he’s not the reason this team sucks.

We could have Pat Mahomes here and this team would still struggle mightily. (Even the chiefs are struggling offensively with him too, lol!)

I look forward to someday getting a better QB. But unfortunately there isn’t a QB tree to just go pick and get instantly better. Jalen Hurts is successful because he has a GM who has built the right talent around him to succeed.

We have the oldest GM in NFL history at the helm who is delusional and out of touch with what a modern NFL roster needs to win playoff games. We have three decades of receipts.

It’s delusional. And his knee jerk reaction after each embarrassing loss is a marketing pitch.
3-4 yard passes with no yac available on 3rd downs and 8-10 needed or 4th down.

It's going to wait till then because the Cowboys decided to elevate a mediocre player and hype him up to be something he will never be with a contract he will never live up to.

A big problem is they just always rely on rookies and injured guys and castaways to play above their levels. It’s not realistic .

Draft talent identify what they can do well and scheme them into advantageous positions.

These sickos are gonna tell us Demarion Overshown is gonna fix everything

Just wait til this lsu corner pans out !

Great post.

You can’t pay a qb all that money if they’re a zero running threat . Doesn’t seem to be how you win in the league ,

you need mobility

I guess our opinion of tearing it up differs a bit. To me, he’d have to have better individual numbers closing the deal rather than just being close.

I agree he was disruptive, but it looked to me like he had an excellent group around him as well.

I said it in the postgame thread but something that constantly sticks out to me is the lack of speed. I’m not sure how they continue to expect to compete in the modern NFL without having guys that pop on the screen. Everyone looks slow and it’s not like they’re overtly physical either. It’s jarring
This!! Everyone is slow not only to react but just plain SLOW.

This offseason and their "fix" to stop the run has back fired in their face. The LBs they added all are better run defenders than pass. So now they are trying to run a zone scheme where LBs will have to cover more and they look like they are running in mud.

Wilson/Hooker are not coverage S...both better at run defense

Elam is just not good - guess preseason was fools gold
Diggs is dog poo - very rich overpaid dog poo, but still dog poo

A healthy Bland over Overshown will help some, but not much.

How long to pressure, usually?

I have to agree with all of this. Letting Jourdan Lewis go while resigning Ferguson and Luepke was dumb

Trading Parsons will eventually be viewed as one of the worst trades in NFL history.

But the real problem with the Cowboys is still the same, Jerry Jones. We let talent leave but never replace it with equal talent. We sign castoffs and cheap free agents which is why we have no pass rush.

The Cowboys had a really good team in 2016, but since them they have gotten worse every year. All teams lose talent, but most teams try to replace what they lose and then add some talent too.
But now what? I feel like the Cowboys badly bungled the 2025 draft. We need playmakers and we took a OG probably 10 or 15 picks to early. He looks like a decent player, but he will not move the needle. But we bungled the 2023 draft badly too. This is why counting on the draft alone is a horrible strategy. As I posted somewhere else, the Rams have had 2 first round picks in the last 10 years. Yet they managed to remain a contending team for the most part.

The reason why other teams consistently contend is because they have front offices with a plan, a strategy and a determination to make their vision come true. We have Jerry Jones who thinks his team will always content no matter how much talent they lose year over year. Jerry thought adding George Pickens was all we needed to win.

And let's not overlook the fact that Jerry has conditions for hiring coaches that no other team in the NFL has. So he winds up with inferior coaching talent and it shows on the field.

Ya, enough already. Do you have to repeat it 1,000,000 times?
