Hard truth about Overshown

Demarvion Overshown was drafted in the 3rd round in 2023. A guy with great speed at LB, and a desire engine that ran high. He would have been drafted in earlier rounds that year had he not had a problematic injury history.

How bad was Overshown’s injury history? Let’s start with his 5 years at Univ of Texas:

• Between 2018 and 2022, the Longhorns played in 64 games including post season. He played in 50 of those 64 games.
• That was about 78% availability. Not great, but certainly better than his pro availability.

Since he was drafted in 2023, here is Overshown’s availability history in Dallas:

• He has played in 19 of the 52 regular season games he could have played in since his arrival in Big D.
• That is an availability rate of about 37%. Ouch.
• After his hamstring injury Sunday night in NY, he will be missing at least one game and maybe two.

Overshown is a hard working, committed young man. No one can question his heart or work ethic. He has twice worked through terrible knee injuries to return to the field. I feel bad for the young man’s luck with injuries.

But as the old saying goes, the first ability every professional athlete MUST have is availability. With an availability rate of 37%, we cannot keep holding a roster spot for a player who is constantly injured.

That may sound cold hearted but if we are committed to turning this thing around, you have to make hard decisions like this. Overshown is in a contract year. If I were the Cowboys FO, this would be his last year here.

Let's revisit this at the end of the year.

I'm no doctor but I feel like those two knee injuries are just too much to overcome to be a quality defender in the NFL again. There are other positions where you might still be able to recover and play at a high level but not LB or DB. When he got the second knee injury in 2024, that might have been the end for him. It's the harsh truth and it's unfortunate for him but at the end of the day, it happens in life and sports. For every Overshown, there are hundreds of other great athletes who were injured in HS/college and didn't even get the chance to have the couple of years in the NFL that he's had.

As a UT alumni, it pains me to say this but you got to let him walk after this season.

He is just too injury prone for NFL football, in 2023 he tore the ACL in his left knee and in 2024 he tore all three ligaments (ACL, MCL, PCL) in his right knee. That is considered a total shred and reconstruction. I believe in 2025 he had a concussion and now in 2026 its a hamstring.

No way am I risking a 2nd contract on this dude.

I’m still amazed at how often this franchise has chosen players with an injury history like this. It’s a dice roll you should only do with players in the 7th round or UFA.

This organization has made more risky injury picks than any team I’ve seen in sports. It’s a dice roll that happens here probably because the guys doing the picking know they have no repercussions if they fail.

Most GMs in all pro sports don’t take chances like this with premium draft picks because they can lose their job over it. Funny how that works.

I mean, if I knew my job was written in stone (which it is not), am I going to put in the extra effort, work overtime, come into the office on the weekends? Or am I just going to cruise and take 2 hr lunches and half-arse it if there is no real consequence for doing so.

That is why most companies (including mine as well) have a nepotism policy that no children of the management team are allowed to work there because of conflict of interest (you are not going to fire your son or daughter regardless of how bad they screw up).

I fully expect O to get another contract even if he's hurt all year. That'll let Jerry get him at a bargain price, you know.

There is a ton of recent research on organizational health that shows nepotism is kryptonite to a large corporation. Small mom and pop businesses can be fine. Not an NFL team with hundreds of employees .

In a league that is built on meritocracy, our organization is built on DNA. And it is a cancer that infects this team every year because of lack of true accountability.

Cutting an injured player has strict rules and guidelines per the league’s CBA. Plus he would count against the cap. Makes more sense to wait until end of this season when his contract is up.

Bobby Wagner should have been signed by Dallas at least 3 different times....get a LBer in here that can diagnose quickly and be where they are supposed to be. I don't care how old he is....whomever is the LBer room is not getting the message across. I have not liked a LBer in Dallas since Sean Lee (and that includes the wolf hunter, who was more hype than substance....and don't get me started with Jaylon Smith)

The question is.... has Wagner played in a 3-4 defense before? Wagner is also a HUGE liability in man coverage vs TEs and backs coming out of the backfield.

I disagree Bob…he’s too good to be absent of all value. Talent wins out in situations like this, more often than not, and there are 31 other teams out there. I think at his level of talent, his injury history would only lower his trade value to about a 5th. GMs like to buy low…

Yup. Not sure why we always try to reinvent the wheel in Dallas. Put him in space on the weak side and let him be a Rover. That's his game. But if he can't stay healthy, it won't matter.
