That depends on what I'm asking for overall, doesn't it? If he's looking for Calvin Johnson money, he can go pound sand and 'suffer' with $13 million.

If he wants $40 million up front, he can agree to a more reasonable long term deal.

He should be making 14 to 14.5 a year with a contract that guarantees him 35-40 upfront.

It is what he is worth to us going forward.

That's the going rate for the best players at his position into a rising cap.

I think he's making the going rate. That's why the franchise tag is structured the way it is.

As I said, he's currently the second-highest paid WR per year in the league.

Also off topic but does anyone know how Hardy's contract is counted for offsetting the Compensation Draft Picks we have coming? From what I've read we got picks in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and three 6's, then lost two of the 6's when we signed Brinkley and Gachkar. It seems like we had one comp pick in rounds 3 - 6, does Hardy negate the 4th round pick?

You can get a maximum of 4 comp picks.

Yeah, it's hard not to conclude that giving him $40M in up-front cash while actually increasing the AAV of his deal to $14M per would be a raw deal for the Cowboys. In general, a player should expect to give back a bit in terms of AAV in exchange for the security they acquire by way of guaranteed money.

Contracts in the NFL aren't compared by AAV. It's not the most important number anyway.

For example McCoy just got 27m guaranteed in a contract.

The WR position has been adjusting down, not up

MWallace, DBowe, PHarvin, LFitzgerald, AJohnson and BMarshall all have been traded or took a pay cut.

That's certainly my thinking. They can't have it both ways.

Signing Greg Hardy eliminated the possibility of receiving a compensatory 3rd round pick for DeMarco Murray in 2016.

I'm not sure that's a given. It could also be that Dez and his agents are looking for 'Calvin Johnson' money and the Cowboys are rightfully refusing to pay that.

Are they?

If Dallas is unable to agree on a long term extension with Dez Bryant and he plays the 2015 season under the franchise tag, the wideout will get tagged again next off-season, and that comes with a 120% raise. If the tag is used for a third time, the amount will increase to whatever the 2017 QB franchise tag happens to be.

That's a lot of money.

2015: $12.823M.
2016: $15.388M (120% increase).
2017: $21.354M (est QB tag based on $165M cap).

That's $49.565M guaranteed.

That comes to an average of $16.522M per season, which eclipses the average of Calvin Johnson ($16.207M).
