Was talking with my wife about potential vacation spots and I came across Vina Del Mar...just curious if anyone has been there. If so, please share your thoughts and experience. Thanks

Always wanted to go there, have been to Santiago which is a bit SE from the coast. We drove to Cartagena from there for a two-dive trip.

There is some kind of music festival there I want to see and have no idea what it is about, but just have to see it!

Just recently got back from a 2.5 month stay in South America and Antarctica. When in Chile, I was down in the Patagonian region hiking Torres del Paine. I only spent 2 days in Santiago and enjoyed the city life, but never got out to Valparaiso. However, I have a two good friends who did a semester abroad out there and they clamored about how beautiful and culturally rich the area surrounding Valparaiso was.

That sounds awesome...which places in SA did you go to? Which places did you enjoy the most? The least?

I had already been to Peru (Lima, Arequipa, Cuzco, Inca Trail, Puno, Lake Titicaca :D) and Bolivia (La Paz, Sucre, Potosi, Santa Cruz), so I figured I wanted to experience the southern part of the continent. My trip consisted of flying into Buenos Aires, then Iguazu Falls, Cordoba, Mendoza, Bariloche, El Bolson, El Calafate to see the Perito Moreno glacier, Ushuaia. Then after I cam eb ack from Antarctica, I went into Chile (Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales) to do the full circuit at Torres del Paine. Left to Santiago to spend a few days before I had my return flight home.

My word. What do you do that allows you this type of travel?

I graduated college last summer. I have a gap year before medical school, so I'm using it wisely. Monetary wise, I lived very frugally while I was there. For lodging, I either stayed at cheap hostels or set my tent up on the side of the road. For transportation, either cheap bus fare or hitchhiking. It's amazing how cheap you can travel if you put your mind to it.

Dude, you're living the dream that most would kill for. Congrats on your hard work to get where you are now. Keep it up! Maybe you'll meet the woman of your dreams in some far away land. Oh, and send some pics. Ahem, of the landscape of course. :D
