Has anyone ever driven Route 66?

My wife and I will have 2 weeks off soon and we were thinking of driving Route 66 from Chicago to LA. Has anyone ever done this before? If so, just a few questions: 1) What were some cool places you stopped to see, 2) How long did it take you to make the trip, 3) Roughly how much did it cost, 4) Where'd you sleep every night, 5) Did you wing it or have all your stops planned out, 6) Was it worth it or should we find something better to do with our time for 2 weeks?

If you do the trip, when you go through Amarillo you should at least stop off at The Big Texan. The food is pretty good and they make some decent craft beer. The Pecan Porter is awesome. Avoid Cadillac Ranch. It sucks out loud.
