Has Camden Brown made the 53?

I know they did it with him at OSU, but I don't want my star Safety being used regularly, or at all. We employ Turpin for a reason or use Mingo there assuming he makes the team
They have been working Downs back there in practice. The reason is he is very good at it.

No idea. Haven't seen enough at this time.

I like him so far, hope he can play against NFL caliber players. That one handed catch was phenomenal.

However, this thread was about him making the 53, an entirely different matter. Not sure, but would you agree it's OK to discuss the positives and negatives? I mean, that's what this site is about, discussions. Each one of us provides what we know, and then we wrangle over it.
You have a good point. I'm glad that the Cowboys played Camden with the first string in training camp practice, so that he gets to face better and better competition. It was great to see him against 2nd and most likely 3rd string corners... but it will be revealing when he lines up against 1st string corners over the next preseason games. I hope he gets that chance, Flournoy and Turpin don't need too many 1st string reps. Let him reveal his skill, because he's elevating his game against every challenge in front of him so far.

So, I'm just wrangling, and the discussion in this thread has rightly has pointed out that Camden doesn't have the sharpest routes yet, so that could prevent him from having such success against 1st string.

In the meantime, his performance either dictates a mysterious injury for the PUP list, or hide him away and hope that the rest of the league presumes that he won't have any success against starting corners, and forget about him with a goldfish memory when it is time for the waiver wire.

Good WRs are a valuable NFL commodity. I don’t see how the Cowboys can allow Brown to be exposed. Goodbye Schoonmaker.

Jerry rice was also a 1st round draft pick.

Camden brown may develop into a great player, but it’s extremely rare that a wr is starting caliber from UDFA year 1. Even guys who did it like a Wes Welker, Adam theilen, miles Austin, etc all took a few developmental seasons.

I can’t really think of a true udfa WR success story the last decade or so who made a massive year 1 impact. Maybe guys like Allen Hurns or Robby Anderson?

It’s possible but it’s the 1% of WRs which I need to see more than 3 catches in one preseason game. WR is a position that scouts get right at a very high rate.
It's rare, but I'm excited that great success for Camden Brown possible! I think you make some really good points, especially with the facts that it almost never happens... I appreciate it!

Well, there are going to be qualifiers ... because it is training camp and preseason. We've seen training camp heroes come and go, so it's hard to say he's made the 53. He's off to a good start, though, and that's all we can really expect at the moment. We certainly can't say that about every player.
Yeah, it’s just camp, and he wasn’t playing starters at Seattle, but that ability to track the ball in the air, locate it and make the catch is real, no matter what time of the year it is and who is covering him. That is something guys are just born with or not. Brown was.

And it wasn’t just the Seattle game where he showed that ability. He has shown it all camp… to the point where the team gave him some snaps with the 1’s. Not only that but he showed it all last year in games for Georgia Southern. It is what he does. He has proven that plenty.

One preseason game - two fantastic touchdown catches.

And while he doesn’t have a lot of speed, he has an elite 10 yard split, so his burst is really good, meaning he get off at the snap very well and he gets separation on his cuts. There have been many WR’s that were really good even though their 40 yard dash was average.

Just a couple of seasons ago I loved Jaxon Smith Njigba coming out of tOSU. People said he was too slow and he wouldn’t be very good. Well… he had an elite 10 yard split and 3-cone drill, which told anyone paying attention that he was going to be able to get separation on his routes.

Now after his offensive player of the year award, everybody can see that now.

Jerry Rice famously ran a 4.6 40, and Anquan Boldin ran a 4.72.

Brown obviously didn’t have the college career of those guys, but they all ran an average or below average 40 time.

Speaking for myself, Brown has a few things that I have always looked for in receivers: great hands (hand-eye coordination), great body control, and an ability to track the ball in the air. Those things tend to be either a have or a not have. It isn’t really taught (or learned). He also is already very good hand fighting with the DB and shows good toughness… both important as well IMO.

Brown just has those innate abilities, which would make me want to give him every chance to become a good player. And I believe the Cowboys coaches will want to as well.

Will he make the 53 man roster? We don’t know for sure but if I had to guess right now, I’d say yeah, he makes it with room to spare unless he gets injured.

Luckily for everyone involved, nobody has to make that decision right now and we all can just wait to see what he does the rest of preseason. I think he’s going to continue showing that he belongs.

No matter what he does… it’s going to be interesting.

I figure he will, too. But for some, there is a need to rush to judge after one preseason game. What we have seen looks good. Let's see where it goes before we break out the anointing oil.

I really like him, hope his route running comes around and that's it's not a lack of physical ability.

Would love to see him against NFL starting quality DBs w/ speed, burst, and lateral agility. That's when the tale will be told.

Not only that, they're getting mad at anyone who preaches caution and patience!!!!

Maybe he can, but he's been rounding off his cuts. Maybe he just didn't have to cut sharply against inferior competition?

Has Camden Brown made the 53? That seems slightly debatable, but if you ask yourself a different question, you realize that Camden Brown has certainly made the 53.

He will most definitely NOT clear waivers if he is released. Right?? So, in a way, Camden Brown would not cause any concerns if he replaced Turpin on the WR depth chart. The next logical thought is.. does Turpin have trade value? If trading Turpin lowered the cost on getting a hard-to-find offensive tackle. If Steele has dropped off as the preseason wears on, I think the Cowboys would strongly consider an upgrade at OT.

What do you think?
I think we should offer up turpin for trent Williams.

Brown for now is the star of TC and PS game 1.
Now a fan favorite.
We see this year after year.

He solidified more opportunities. But let’s see more from him and others first.
I still have Mingo ahead of Brown. For speed, experience and ST’s.

Brown will most likely clear waivers and be on the PS.

Teams will look at their own players first for PS players.
If he is claimed off waivers that team must put him on the 53 man roster.
