Has Laroi Glover won the starting NT job?

I think he has. There is just no way in denying what he provides this defense, and I remember hearing glover talking about trying to beat out Fergy. He has been stout against the run, so there is no reason he shouldn't be on the field.

THoughts?

Haven't seen enough of Fergy to even say there is competition. I don't even know if Fergy is able to start the opener yet. I suspect he will play and I think he will be ok. But right now that isn't a sure thing.

And yes Glover is playing well. So it appears no matter who starts we are fine at NT and DT.

Yes, although he will still be rotated in the base so I'm not sure it will mean more snaps for Glover. We also need him fresh for the nickel.

That is what I was thinking - was there even any competition?

Even knowing he played the position well in the past, I have a hard time believing he's not too small for it. I'll be convinced if he can hold up in the regular season. Look at some of the other 3-4 NTs around the league:

San Diego, Jamal Williams 348 lbs
New England, Vince Wilfork 325 lbs
Oakland, Ted Washington 365 lbs
Pittsburgh, Casey Hampton 325 lbs

Glover is listed at 285-- that's a scary difference. We need a healthy Ferguson rotating in with him.

Glover was a beast last night as always. Fergy will play a lot but his time in the tub has cost him the "starter" title, imo.

My level of respect for Glover has grown exponentially. He has clearly took the challenge like he said he would and risen to the occasion. Our defense will be better for it and opposing centers will suffer greatly. :)

I still want to see Fergy and La'Roi on the field together.

Ferg is a 3-4 nt, yes.

But he has also been primarily a 4-3 tackle freeing up his three tech partner for some serious interior push the last four years.

If Butterball is stalwart enough to salvage Jon Evan's career just think of how La'roi Glover will shine beside him. And La'Roi freaking DESERVES it.

Yes, Nors, I know it's a base 3-4, and I know a lot of the 4-3 'look' will be sliding up and over a big hybrid backer.

But the Glover-Ferguson combination is just too good a possibiity to ignore. And I am sure Bill won't.

Why do you think practices are closed to the Media? Bill is devising all kinds of wrinkles to give O-coordinators nightmares. I can't wait until he reveals/unleash them.

La'Roi said something in the press today that I've been thinking about all summer, and that is we now have playmakers, impact players, at all three levels of the D.

I am counting the old guard of La'Roi, Dat and Roy as impact players. And Tnew (last night was a preview) of the impact he can make when he isn't the sole target. Davis is displaying a lot of savvy, and tho Henry (the poor man's Ty Law) is not going to woq like Tnew, he is the glue that makes it all possible.

Burnette is some smart player...I expect real impact from him. From Ware of course, and also Canty.

Then there is enough Henry like glue to allow the risks involved with playmaking. Singleton, Ellis, Glenn, Ferguson once he gets off his fat arse..Coleman seems content in the critical lunchpail role. Ratliff some solidity and even line push. To me it's a nice mix. You got guys who can shine and guys who can let them shine.

Yep, it really IS starting to look like a Parcells D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(but don't be surprised if at the very FIRST sign of crumbling run D, a few missed assignments..some backside is seriously reamed out....it will happen, it always does, but expect 'impact' to take a backseat when it does..it will be two steps forward, one back til they are working like clockwork, all trusting one another..but Bill and Zim won't let anyone run right over their D..that's the first perogative.)

on opening day, the first defensive series, will Glover be at NT or Fergie? well, right now you gotta say Glover. but really, we have to say for arguments sake that we'll be using versions of both alignments that will feature both players, so "starting NT" is a misnomer.
Glover is a keeper. He and Fergie will cause a lot of problems for OL, that i am sure of. with playmakers all around, this D will be fearsome...

Good post, Sarge.......Glover is and will always be a competitor. I wasn't sure it he could withstand the rigors of NT but he has sure proved me wrong. Same with Greg Ellis.
