Many Many moons ago it use to be one of the most coveted College Football Head Coaching Gig.

Funny the last 2 times they have tried to hire coaches they are having a hard time getting anyone to take the job.

Maybe it is how they never allowed Ty to truly rebuild or maybe it is the academics standards which makes it harder to recruit compared to Florida; Texas; Ohio State etc etc. Has Notre Dame fallen so low in the pecking order or is it because of no conference affiliation.

Could it be the internet and the change in TV Coverage from 10 years ago. The advantage Notre Dame had is the TV contract with NBC while that is not the only game in town any more. The emergence of ESPN; Fox Sports Southwest (or what ever it is now); College Game day packages on satellite; plus CBS there is 10 times the exposure of College football on TV taking away the advantage Notre Dame used in recruiting hey everyone watches Notre Dame every week on NBC. Now you have ESPN Game Day pumping the game of the week and 100 other things Notre Dame is no longer the only gig in town on TV.

Because coaches know they can't win there. First, they play a competitive schedule every year. Their worst team is usually a recognizable program as opposed to North Texas. They can't recruit the best athletes due to their academic guidelines. And even if players are eligible to play for Notre Dame, why would they want to go there? South Bend has terrible weather, terrible women and it's in the middle of nowhere. And kids today didn't grow up idolizing Notre Dame so it's not worth enduring all the aforementioned weaknesses of the school just for its reputation. Kids did that in the 60's, 70's and 80's but they won't do that now. Why would yo go there when you go to Florida, Miami, USC, Texas, Tennessee etc. Back to my point, Notre Dame can't accept transfers. And on top of that, they are under tremendous scrutiny because their school has unrealistic expecations every year because "They are Notre Dame."

Finally, the firing of their current coach scared a lot of coaches away For one thing, he didn't do that bad of a job. He inherited bad players from Bob Davey and went 10-3 in his first year. He had a bad second season but had a winning record this year and upset Tennessee and Michigan.Coaches see this and realize they probably won't exceed these records by much if they do at all.

I don't think it has lost it's luster, it's just more and more kids are opting for other big name colleges like Oklahoma (see Adrian Peterson), Miami, and even Texas and I believe Notre Dame's recruiting department is lagging.

You also might take into consideration that the knee jerk reaction of Notre Dame's admin. over the last several years has coaches in the NFL ranks and college ranks alike feeling that it's not a very safe job.

How is this saying anything other than Notre Dame has lost its luster?

James Notre Dame schedule last year was not harder than anything Auburn played against from the sec. Come on they get the cake walk game every year from Navy plus Stanford has not been a good football team in ages. Boston College is always a solid program but it is not an elite program like Michigan. When was the last time Michigan State has even contended for a Big 10 Championship.

Notre Dame played Boston College(8-3), Michigan(9-2), Tennessee(9-3), USC(12-0), Pittsburgh(8-3) and Purdue(7-4) this year. Tennessee just finished playing in the SEC championship. Michigan is playing in the Rose Bowl. USC is playing in the Orange Bowl. Pittsburgh is playing in the Fiesta Bowl. You don't think this is a tough schedule? Three of their opponents are playing in three of the four major bowl games. Even Navy finished 9-2 this year.

Last year, Notre Dame played 5 ranked teams which included Florida St., Washington St., Michigan, Purdue, and USC Let me add they also played Michigan St. and Pittsburgh, both of whom finished with a winning record at 8-5. Their final game last year was against Syracuse which was 6-6.

Who said Notre Dame played a harder schedule than Auburn? The point is they play a competitive schedule every year. Except unlike the Auburn athletic directors, the Notre Dame ones expect you to be in a BCS on an annual basis. This is why coaches don't want to go there. And nearly every week, they have an opponent from a recognizable conference with the exception of Navy or Air Force. Stanford was 9-3 three years ago. Last year, Michigan St. 8-5 and 7-5 in 2001. Are these teams better than Georgia, LSU, Texas, Texas AM and Tennessee? Not by a mile, but are these teams traditionally better than Citadel, Louisiana Tech, Kansas, Baylor, Kentucky, North Texas, Houston, and other teams like them? Yeah

And look at Auburn's schedule. They only played against 4 teams with winning records which included Georgia, LSU, Tennessee(twice) and 6-5 Alabama. Oklahoma played their share of cupcakes including Bowling Green, North Texas, Baylor, Kansas, and Houston. And while Nebraska, and Kansas St. have traditionally been strong, these teams finished with losing records this year. USC played a lot of weak Pac-10 teams this year as well.
