I know, another Dez thread...

However, this one will focus on nothing but football, so I believe it's worthy of posting.

I originally touched on the focus of this thread in today's "Live from the Alamo Dome" thread, but I thought the topic warranted it's own discussion. What I've noticed is, Dez has been making each training camp practice like his own personal highlight reel. Every day I read the updates, I am astonished with how many reports are made of him getting open against our best corners, making great adjustments to the ball, and spectacular one-handed grabs!

I hate to bring out the anointing oil so early...but man am I getting excited!

I realize the live blogging during training camp is a relatively new phenomenon, but I can't remember ANY player have this kind of consistent impact throughout each and every practice. And while I do realize that training camp is just that, practice, the sheer number and frequency of outstanding plays that Dez keeps making is causing me to wonder just how special he is?

In my 30+ years of being a die hard Cowboy's fan, I can't recall any player making this much of an impact in camp, and causing this much of a stir! So my question to all of you is, have you ever seen anything like this before? Or, are we really witnessing one of the most phenomenal starts in the history of the NFL?

only time will tell. I will say that Randy Moss was probably putting on quite a show in his 1st training camp.

As for Cowboys rookies making a stir, maybe not this much since T Dorsett?

If I remember correctly, TD was on the cover of SI and the title was something like "Tony D goes to Big D" . . . . or something like that.

I still remember reading clips of players saying he's the only guy who can make a 3 yard run look exciting.

I remember that Coach Landry initially had him blocking a lot in TC, and finally someone asked can we see him run the ball now? :laugh2:

Excellent question, 7footer. I, too, have been considering this very point, and was close to starting a thread about it.

When was the last time a rookie made such a deep impression so early in anyone's camp?

I remember Dorsett's rookie preseason and I believe we were playing the Seahawks and he ripped a long run...it was hard to explain the excitement that went throughout the entire team, coaches, announcers as well as fans.
A surreal moment for sure. It was like everyone knew at that moment that this guy was as advertised...I am going to be cautiously optimistic about Bryant, but I am excited about this rookie...how can you not be?

Wasnt bennett last year getting rave reviews like this almost every practice?

But Bennett wasn't considered a huge budding superstar like Bryant was in college.
Bennett has such god-given ability he could be an all-pro at either TE or bulk up and be an all-pro offensive tackle. His lack of attention to detail and his immaturity is what is holding Bennett back.
If the light ever goes on for Bennett look the hell out!

I suspect with more training camps opening this weekend, news from the Cowboys' camp will have to compete with the news of each team's young phenom.

Bennett was talked about, but nothing like this.

There has been a lot of hype around Cowboy rookies but nothing like this.

Try 2008.

His name starts with an F.

And all the reports say Dez has calmed down in the last few days which is telling you that the DB's have now seen him and they are adjusting to his size and speed.

People should start calming down on Dez.

What position is harder to learn coming in a rookie: WR or RB?

Felix was killing it too and he didn't have nearly as big of a start as we all thought. Didn't even see him get a touch on offense in game four of that rookie season.

If we didn't have good WR's already I could see the Dez is God hype, but we have Miles and Witten in front of anyone else. That makes Dez still #3 on the charts.

The kid is going to give us a bunch of wow plays, but people talking like he's going to come up with 100 catches and 14 TD's have to calm down.

Yeah I don't see Dez as a 1000yd wr this season but I wouldn't be suprised with 9 or 10tds this season...Dez scores tds and I really believe in the red-zone he will be a tough matchup for opposing defenses.

How quickly you guys forget. Dez doesn't even scratch the surface of the diamond that was Danny Amendola. Dez makes one handed catches? Danny caught them with his teeth. Dez won't carry a veteran's pads off the practice field? The veterans carried Danny off the practice field. Dez signed "early" just before camp started? Danny signed in April.

Sportswriters were too scared to interview him...

I'd have to disagree with you there on both accounts. I remember when Felix was drafted, and I was really excited about him as well. While Felix had a good training camp, it was nowhere near as eventful as Dez's has been, even comparing it to this week only! I would compare Felix's first Training Camp to the first camp that T.O. participated in here in Dallas. Sure, there was excitement, but only one or two plays that really had people talking. Dez on the other hand seems to have about two or three plays each practie that have people gushing over him.

And as far as Dez calming down...nope. He had about 4 TD's today and another spectacular one-handed catch. By all accounts, he is still knocking everyone's socks off on a daily basis.

None of this means I am crowning him the next Jerry Rice...but I seriously have never seen anything like it. I was too young to appreciate when Dorsett was in training camp, but thanks to the posters who brought him up as well...That sounds like it was the closest comparison thus far.

I agree with you about Felix not getting anywhere near the hype that Dez has gotten so far. But you are arguing with an agenda that DCFanatic has had since pre draft. Check the post from PreDraft. Then you will see.

Ok DCFanatic relax. I'm having fun with you.;)

But seriously i dont remember Felix getting anywhere near the Hype. But i am not saying that Hype equals production. I am curious about how this year will pan out for Dez. Based on the hype he is heading to the ProBowl this year. I also dont remember hearing this much about a rookie WR from any team in a long time. My love and following of the cowboys may be why.

we didnt see felix get a touch and i believe that was the first game we lost. He was getting minimal touches the first 3 games and he scored everyone. Him not getting any touches in game 4 had nothing to do with his lack of ability, but more to do with the red head genius being and idiot. Im not saying he will get 100 and 15 either, but dude seems to have a knack for going to get the ball.

I don't recall Felix receiving this level of hype, either.

However, it stands to reason that, due to the nature of their position, receivers would have an easier time garnering attention at practice. Which is more noticeable to the typical observer: a leaping, one-handed grab, or an awesome cut? I vote the former.

I wouldn't say that Dez has "cooled off."

Reminds me some of Demarcus Ware's first camp. Parcells was stunned by Ware's athletic ability and quickly compared Ware to Lawrence Taylor. Ware made some crazy plays that preseason, if I'm not mistaken.

Same thing has happened with Dez ... compared to the likes of Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, etc.

Dorsett and Emmitt each turned heads in their first training camps. Ed Jones created a real stir too.

Yeah, and he scored a TD in the opener on his first or second carry against Cleveland, didn't he?

I remember Felix making a big splash but nothing nearly close to what Dez has been making. It could be a negative tho. He might never live up to all the hype he has been getting
