All jokes aside, I'm really starting to get excited about Maliek Collins. He was very good last year, but all reports are saying he's gotten even better.

I know we were all looking for that outside guy - and we still are - and we should. But I don't think Collins is getting enough credit from a lot of people for the rookie season he had and his upside potential.

I looked over his numbers and compared them to the measuring stick for Marinelli's 3-technique in Warren Sapp. It turns out that Collins' rookie year numbers were actually better than the 2013 Hall of Famer's. Their size is nearly identical too at 6'2" and about 300 lbs as well.

The 2016 draft was great, and looks to be getting even better, and Collins was an underrated part of that group. I think he's on the cusp of rising even higher in standing and becoming one of the premier defensive tackles in this league.

Maybe we need to pick up a #96 jersey before they're sold out?

Here's a collection of a few stories about Collins:

Agreed.

You give me a DT that can get 10 sacks... And to me that's pure gold.

He doesn't necessarily have to get many sacks, he needs to command more double teams to free up out DEs. Either way, I'll be happy.

He's schemed up to be isolated on the outside shoulder of the guard, his main job is to get upfield and be disruptive as possible. I agree that sacks aren't the end all be all, but if you're a disruptive penetrating tackle those sack numbers will be there. I just want a consistently disruptive player at 3T, it's the catalyst for this scheme to be successful. There's a reason the best one's have been described as "game wreckers", it's one of the few positions on defense that can actually have that effect.

There are very few things an offense can do schematically to stop a superior 3T from ruining your day, they directly impact every down. Not so much the case with edge rushers. Collins isn't there yet, but hopefully he takes another step in the right direction this year. Any chance for improvement on defense starts with him.

I don't care if he has any sacks this year. If he's blowing up plays and other guys are make tackles/sacks, that's fine with me. If he plays well, guys like Sean Lee will reap the benefits.

Fully agree (although I want him to get sacks as well). I couldn't agree more.

Yes, it's possible the Cowboys have already acquired their "war daddy" but we will not know until we get this season started. I'm not even sure Collins is the prime candidate for that moniker. Maybe Tappers breaks out this year or our rookie Taco learns from Tyron Smith how to be the "war daddy". Even David Irving could be that guy or maybe we do just have a bunch of "war uncles" that amount to a war daddy by committee.

One year Too Tall and Martin had a personal bet...a case of beer a week i think...on who got the most sacks.

Something to consider :)

Wow.

It really is the offseason when a player like Collins gets elevated to war daddy status.

During the season, nobody was counting on his game changing skills.

You may be right but if Collins was a first round pick last season...we would be expecting him to improve upon his impressive rookie season. I don't believe we should temper expectations.

After all, he doesn't have a heck of a lot of improving to do before he can be talked about amongst the best at his position, at least statistically. He had what 6 sacks last season? I would suspect 8-10 sacks is the elite benchmark for his position.

Maliek Collins would be the talk of the fanbase if he had been selected in the typically average drafts of the early 2000.

Here is a 3rd round draft pick who came on strong towards the end of the season, recording a sack in three of the last four games. If he should begin the new season in the same way he ended the last, then the excitement will be justified.

Taking a look at the 2016 draft again......should Jaylon Smith demonstrate his past dominance, Maliek will be a part of that epic draft but there are even more exciting ramifications..,....what if Maliek and Jaylon form the same type of on field relationship that Zek and Dak have offensively. Each of their exploits serve to assist the other in continuing produce at an elite level.

Dak and Zeke could not be as good without each other because defenses must respect and dedicate time and effort towards both weapons.

A linebacker's best friend is a dominant DT and a DT will enjoy the work much more knowing quality help is microseconds away in the form of an aggressive linebacker.

As to the term "war-daddy", I don't believe it to be adequate, doesn't invoke the proper imagry.

I like "Alpha Dog". I don't see the D-line as a group of individuals with a few names mentioned often. I see them as a wild unpredictable pack or swarm in which there are a large number of contributors but there is always one in front that leads the way. He is the drive killer. He may not make the play but he is a significant reason someone else did.

I am hopeful that the D-Line will find some consistent pass rush and consistently high level play. That's all I can hope for. I don't think they've got 1 guy who is a difference maker so I'm hopeful that the sum of all the players on the D-Line mesh together well and provide a great unit.
