Have the Dallas Cowboys discovered the next great safety duo?

...Yes, this is shade – but our former first round draft pick – safety Byron Jones from Connecticut – had one of those interceptions on a hail mary pass. Unfortunately, it counts on the stat sheet. This season, I’m looking for fourth round draft pick – Xavier Woods from Louisiana Tech – to replace Byron Jones this season.

Teams completed 67.1 percent of their passes against our secondary. That ranks us 31st just above the Detroit Lions. More interceptions come with a pass rush, but the Cowboys ranked 13th with 36 sacks.

Given a mixture of cornerback and safety, Byron Jones had 8 interceptions during four years of college. In four years, Xavier Woods had 14 interceptions. Woods led Louisiana Tech in solo tackles (60) and interceptions (5) in his senior season. This secondary has been missing a ball hawk and Jones has never been that guy.

Jones isn’t a hitter like strong safety Jeff Heath – who has 4 NFL interceptions – so he would be a liability at the line of scrimmage in run support. Jones tends to be a step or two behind plays in pass coverage. Feel free to mention in the comments that Jones shut down New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski in a 2015 game that we lost 30 – 6, I’ll wait...

We were somewhere around this sentence, at the end of the first paragraph, when the drugs began to take hold.

.

I am not sure about the main premise of this article, but the above paragraph was very interesting. We know that an improved pass rush will improve secondary performance, but at the same time, it also shows that it was time for a major overhaul in the back end and reaffirms the decision to not spend a lot of money on the old guys and invest heavily in young, talented players. Even with growing pains, you have to think we can expect better than what we had last year.

Nice. Predicting greatness out of a bench/special teams player and a late round Louisiana tech draft pick. Meanwhile knocking our first rounder who has done a solid job at doing what we asked him to do. Good article if the goal was to make Cowboys fans look like the special ed. class of the NFL.

"Woods is the guy that you should be excited about and I can’t wait to see him and Heath in the secondary together. Quarterbacks might think they’re facing Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed."

@CCBoy needs to be benched for posting this garbage.

Yea and this fan isn't the one who has to be spoon fed possible considerations in looking forward, without expecting a rock solid and statistical position when there are four, yea four new faces in the secondary. You go, prep...

So using the same approach in your statement, the Cowboys will be measured by the blunts smoked...because you didn't state how things would or would not shape up or change. Talk about sedimentary rock I.Q. stuff here...but the OP did include a possible addition to the cornerbacks of Jones. Whether one agrees with the premise or not...

Sedimentary rock iq? Hahaha. This coming from the guy pushing the article comparing Jeff Heath and Xavier Woods to Polamalu and Reed. Wow. I really hope you are right, but I'm afraid you need to pump the brakes a bit and submit to a DDDDDDRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUGGGGGGG TTTTTTTEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSTTTTTTTTT.

While Jones isn't a top Free Safety(yet I hope), it seems a tad premature to say Woods, a 6th round draft pick, will come in and unseat him. Jones had a quiet year with some up and down play, but was once again asked to do a lot and overall had a good year IMO. While I hope to see more playmaking, especially with how athletically gifted he is, he wasn't the limiting factor in the secondary.

If anything, Heath will have to watch over his shoulder in regards to Woods. I expect Heath to start, but it's his job to lose to Woods, not Jones imo. Besides, they'll probably do another rotation at SS again, trying to play to Heath and Woods strengths, depending how well they perform in TC/PS

Unless the drugs have already taken hold I could swear that Mr. Woods was a 6th round draft pick!

I'm a big fan of Heath and I do think he's improved but I can't say he's great. Woods replacing Jones? I don't see that happening but if he really is that good then the Cowboys have stolen another draft pick. For me, I'll just take good as far as the safety position goes.

fallacy of the article comparing Jones to Woods is how Jones was used in college vs Woods. From what I can gather Woods could free lance all he wanted and Jones could not.
