Having a good off-season: Fortune favors the bold

That is exactly what I think when I read something about not trusting Jerry to make the right moves.

Of course we can't, but the other option is to curl up into a little ball and give up.
Or option C: accept the reality of what the Cowboys are under Jerry Jones, and stop trying to game this thing out like fantasy football. It doesn't work that way with the Cowboys, and there's no point in getting mad at people who give you a reality check in threads like this.

No need to curl up into a ball and give up when you accept the reality of the situation. There's no more "giving up" after 30 years of this nonsense, just personal delusion that "this year feels different", or acceptance and the waiting game for the Grim Reaper to make the change at GM.

Here is the mistake IMO.......we sometimes forget the composition of most Super Bowl winners is different from year to year. The Eagles won it last, nearly loaded with talent on both sides of the ball, including TWO highly paid WRs. In other words, we can not say the Seahawks have now provided the only template for winning a Super Bowl. The sampling is too small........
Got to look at their cap hits. I don't think they were highly paid in the 2024 season. And the dropoff in their D was dramatic after dumping some good D players to pay their O guys.

I think you misread my intent. I hate the little personal insult game many of you play, it's very childish.

I'm not mad at anyone, but it appears that you are.

Dallas will not change the formula. One thing I learned in my 25 year career in crisis response is that previous behavior is a good indicator of future behavior. So 30 years tell us it will be more of the same.

Like the old saying, “When someone tells you who they are - believe them.”

In Jerry’s case, he’s been telling us who he is for three decades. Whatever JJ does this off-season (and I hope it’s mostly good) he will crow about it, wax on and on about it, then sell it ad nauseam.

He’s told us who he is for far too long.

Thanks

Guess the team we trade him too can’t just assume the Tag, they must offer him a contract?

Doesn’t seem likely another team would offer much in trade unless they were going to offer him a regular contract.
That’s not my understanding. The team making the trade is not required to offer the tagged player a new contract.

Having said that, it would probably be stupid to trade for a guy who is tagged then not offer him a new deal. I may be wrong but that’s the way I understand it.

My reply to this post isn’t directed at the poster you are referring to but more general in nature. Yes, the personal attacks do get old and should not occur.

You should be able to give legitimate crisis of players without people taking it personally.

I’m on Reddit as well, and comment about several NBA teams. Man those sub reddits must be moderated by 14 year olds. It’s insane how militant some of those subs are. It’s like a damn echo chamber there. You can’t even have legitimate discussion there.

That's what I've found, this site is well moderated, well ran. Yeah, there's issues, there always is, but still great.

We currently have been overrun by some posters who do nothing but lay little insults. Not sure why, but it's making the place not as good at present.

Usually people here are mostly civil, even when they really disagree.

But the point was “hangin round the rim “ is the immediate priority.

Jethro has used another phrase “ remaining relevant and interesting.”
I agree but hanging around the rim was only accomplished by trading for Quentin Williams, a desperation move to stay relevant or status quo or mediocre.

No, the correct option is to not believe anything NGM says or does until we are real contenders again

I think fortune favors the prepared.

That is, I believe that the most successful GMs are those that have a specific plan of action. They want to build their team a certain way because their experience and knowledge has convinced them that particular structure has a high probability of success.

They have based this belief on what they have observed and evaluated over decades in their profession starting as scouts or players and moving up each level based on merit. They have been prepared to make these important decisions.

The most successful GMs have a plan that includes some innovative idea that is unfamiliar to the rest of the league. This is where I believe the concept of bold can be an advantage.

Taking risks is gambling and there is always a possibility or even a high probability of failure. Making decisions based on superior skill sets of experience, knowledge and evaluative abilities combined with the commitment and a superior work ethic is what separates the successful GMs.

Jerry Jones is a gambler. He takes his risks based on hope as a substitute to ability and skill. He has no plan, no innovative vision. He is always a step or two behind the rest of the league. As soon as he has patterned his team after a recent success team, the league has already moved on to something new.

No team can have long term success as a contender with the 50-50 results of Jerry Jones taking risks. Jerry Jones has taken many risks and very few have turned out well.

Among his most well-known risks is drafting players with injuries that have lowered draft status in the hope of acquiring talent that is superior to their draft position.

I do not know of a single instance in which this risk resulted in the desired outcome. At best, these players may achieve short term success as their physical attributes slowly deteriorate over a period of 2-3 years.

There are appropriate times to consider a high-end contract with a veteran free agent but I would not consider using this process as a method to improve the team beyond an incremental degree.

Veteran free agents make great supporting members of the team but we have to remember that their former team passed on the opportunity to retain this player's services. We should never expect the same level of their prior performance. It should also be understood that this player is typically overpaid as a result of market demand.

Therefore, the typical strategy of GMs in the NFL seem to be that you sign a high-end veteran free agent to enhance that which is already gaining strength. The free agent is not a savior. He is a savvy veteran with the maturity and experience to maximize the advantage of an emerging squad.

Taking another look at D-Law and his teammates. We see a D-line with the potential to dominate. They have perennial Pro Bowler Leonard Williams in addition to their 2024 1st round pick Byron Murphy who had a breakout 2nd season. Lawrences' presence allowed the defense to take better advantage of an already emerging D-line.

It would not make sense to pay a veteran to come in and attempt to reverse prior poor results. Veterans can offer a temporary boost in talent during a window. However, by definition, they are typically not a long-term solution.

The most important aspect of being bold would have to be the individual and his level of expertise. If a GM is going to be bold then he should have the credentials that earn the right to take the type of risks that will affect the team's future for many seasons to come.

This condition effectively excludes the current GM of the Dallas Cowboys.
