WOW, wouldnt it be very funny and interesting if those Commanders can void their contract in 2011, and ole danny boy loses all of that money. My question is how much contract hit would they take in 2011 if they left? Thought those cowboys fans might want to know, and laugh if that was to happen.

Albert Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall now have the option to void their contracts and become free agents in 2011 after renegotiating.

It's not going to happen, though. Per the arrangement, Haynesworth would have to return $16.8 million of his $21 million 2010 signing bonus if he wanted to hit the open market. Hall would have to pay back his $15 million bonus. Commanders GM Bruce Allen renegotiated the deals to take advantage of the lack of a salary cap this year.

I forgot how much they paid him. Let that sink in everyone.

I absolutely LOVE Dan Snyder. Best "other team" owner ever.

I posted the article that talks about these contract changes here:
http://cowboyszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180237

It's actually a very smart move by the Commanders that frees up cap space after 2010 in case the cap comes back. It really doesn't matter to me how much Danny pays these players this year since there's no cap.

Posts: 1,369 Article About Commanders Cap Machinations

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"As of March 11th, the Commanders had a total team salary amount of $141.6 million, by virtue of the Haynesworth and Hall renegotiations of March 12th, this number is now roughly $170 million. To put this in perspective, the baseline salary cap in 2009 was $128 million. So what did the Commanders do?

In his infamous $100 million contract of 2009, Haynesworth had a $21 million option bonus. As part of the deal, the Commanders reserved the right to convert that option bonus to signing bonus, and that’s exactly what they did according to league sources. However, they did this conversion with a slight twist. Not only did they convert the option bonus to a $21 million signing bonus, but they also added a voidable provision by which if Haynesworth pays back $16.8 million of the signing bonus, then the 2011 – 2014 contract years void away. From a team salary accounting standpoint, because the voidable is solely in the player’s control, the proration of the signing bonus does not go into 2011 – 2014, meaning all of the $21 million signing bonus counts in the uncapped year of 2010. As a result, Haynesworth’s team salary number in 2010 went from $8.8 million to a whopping $25.6 million. His subsequent team salary numbers are $6.4 million, $8.2 million, $10 million, $10.8 million, and $12.8 million respectively. With this new voidable provision, if Haynesworth decides he's unhappy with his role in the Commanders' new 3-4 defense and he can come to an agreement in principle with a new team that would guarantee him the $16.8 million he'd have to pay back to the Commanders, then in theory 2010 could Haynesworth's last year in Washington.

Similarly, Hall had a $15 million option bonus in his contract signed in the 2009 offseason. The Commanders converted this $15 million to signing bonus and also provided Hall with the voidable clause, whereby the entire $15 million, from a team salary accounting standpoint, stays in 2010. As a result of this maneuver, Hall’s team salary number went from $6.8 million to $18.3 million in 2010. His subsequent manageable team salary numbers are $5.3 million, $6.8 million, $8.3 million, and $9.5 million respectively."

Cowboyjoe, I was making a stupid joke. Dante Hall was the return specialist for the Chiefs a while ago. DeAngelo Hall is the Commanders cornerback.

Well when AH was signed by the Skins, the parade of skin fans who informed all of us Cowboy fans that AH was going to wreck havoc in their opponents backfield and as 1 fan put it, keep offensive coaches sleepless the week before.

Now you're changing to the 3-4, and wont have the monster wrecker anymore and no one can figure out why you have the best "defensive player EVA" and now you're changing schemes and cant keep him.

Doesnt seem like a sound investment from the get go.

So what does this have to do about moving this bad investment into one year. So, assuming the cap comes back, his cap numbers are fairly small?

I think it shows that Allen is smart enough to realise that the money spent on AH was a really bad investment, especially with a move to a 3-4, and this allows them to put more of the money in this uncapped year so that it doesn't hurt their cap so much in the future to have a very average guy that they've over-paid for on their books going forward.

It's a good move for Allen whose simply trying to fix a big mistake by Danny Boy before he got to Washington.

It in no way indicates how the FO feels about Haynesworth. Decreasing his cap hit for future years is a good strategy whether he's the best player ever or the worst player ever.

Yeah, I was gonna say the same thing lol. This move would be a good move REGARDLESS of whether or not Haynesworth or Hall are perrenial Pro Bowlers or working at McDonalds in 2011. Their talent level did not instigate this move.
