Agreed 100%. They're trying to stick to the books, but they should have fudged for "movie" purposes and kept them all together.

That said, last night's episode was incredible. The best so far.
Agreed all around.... Its definitely picking up steam IMO. Still watching and I'm expecting it to really ramp up for the ending. 4 episodes left I believe.

Last night's episode was another brutal one. I can't imagine what it was like to march into those mountains. The Japanese were attacking from all over the place and at any time. Next week looks like it will cover Iwo Jima. I won't spoil anything for those who don't know the actual story.

Basilone's woman in the movie is uber hot. Not a bad sex scene last week, didn't see much but powerful.

Too bad Leckie is gone, he was my favourite character.

When the Gunnery Sargeant Highwayesque character lost it last night, you know it must have been tough.

Freakiest scene though was that weird guy throwing stones into the dead Japanese guy's head.

Obviously though he knew Sledge is not a bad guy and doesn't want him to lose his humanity so he made up the story about germs so that Sledge wouldn't take out that Japanese guy's gold teeth. Then again, maybe he just wanted the teeth himself.

The woman from that scene last week was Anna Torv from Fringe.

Looked back at some letters I have copies of from Marines who fought in the pacific (to their fathers and brothers- they did not write the hard stuff to sweethearts and the like) a lot of that is spot on. However they seemed to picture a lot of types like the Gunny that did not break or go crazy; they just got meaner.

Just watched the last episode. These last two episodes have been epic. In this last one, the following scenes were classic/unforgettable: the stone throwing, the cave crapper, and Skip's demise. I was so weirded out by the stone throwing, I got out of my chair.

I'm kinda disappointed next week's episode will go back to Basilone's story. I don't like the jumping around. Sledge's story and character are easily the best of the three.

The Pacific is kind of boring. I had high hopes for it, but the characters just aren't strong enough to pull it off.

BTW wasn't the kid who plays the corpsman the kid in Simon Birch?

edit: yep, Joseph Mozzello plays Corpsman Sledge.

Yeah I had to look up who played SledgeHammer the other night. He's probably better known as the little boy in Jurassic Park.

I think the characters they started with were weaker than Leckie, Sledge and Snafu. Especially Snafu. From the first scene he was in, his eyes freaked me out, and I hated him. He's grown on me, but he's still a twisted individual.

Apparently Basilone's coming back to combat in the next episode. I've been wondering where they were going with him.

I really like the series as well, although the last episode on R&R wasn't my favorite.

My Uncle Homer spent most of the war fighting in the Pacific with the Marines so I spent a lot of time reading about those battles in my youth. Hopefully they'll have an episode on Peleliu because that's really where the Americans start to see an entrenched Jap presence.

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa is a World War II memoir by Eugene Sledge and required WWII reading in my opinion.

I feel like an idiot that I didn't make the connection at first but Eugene Sledge is that one being depicted in the series.

This book is well worth the read:
http://www.amazon.com/Old-Breed-E-B...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1272552679&sr=1-1

My father gave it to me 20+ years ago and it's stuck with me as one of the best books I've ever read.

That's interesting. They always show Sledge tallying up something... And I think he's been writing in a diary, but I could be wrong?? Wonder if that's him keeping accounts for his future book?

May have to check that one out.

If you watch the HBO on Demand info you can see that he is taking small notes in his New Testament. He didn't write the book for a long time (35 years if I'm remembering correctly) so it's really amazing that he remembers the kind of detail he does.

I'm going to have to start watching this at some point. Although, it looks like I may need to watch Band of Brothers first.

So does this series follow the War in the Pacific from start to finish, or just a specific portion of it?

It follows the Marines involvement anyway.

However I don't know how they squeeze Iwo Jima and Okanawa into three episodes and still wrap up the characters.

Now that everyone has watched the "meat" of the series what's everyone's impression?

The more I view the greater the appreciation I have for what those guys had to go through in the Pacific.

I'm really looking forward to see how they wrap the characters up in Sunday's finale.
