Head Hunting

For the most part, I’ve steered clear of this topic because at the end of the day it’s much ado about nothing until it is something, which won’t be until after the current regular season, whenever that ends for the Cowboys….and if that is after the playoffs or (dare I say it) the Super Bowl, this topic will have likely faded away completely.

The question is who should the Cowboys select to be the Head Coach of the future should they make the majority of the Dallas Cowboys fanship and surrounding media’s dream come true and finally fire Jason Garrett? I have a name in mind, but before I get to that, allow me to briefly explain why I am considering this name in particular.

If the Cowboys part ways with Garrett and bring in a new Head Coach, traditionally this is done at the expense of the entire coaching administration, meaning coaches like Kris Richard, Marc Colombo, and Ben Bloom will likely follow him out the door; unless, of course, one of them is promoted to the position in Garrett’s stead. The most likely to ascend to the position would be Kris Richard, but as much as I respect and revere him as the de facto defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, I think it’s a bit premature in Richard’s coaching career to hand him the entire team. He’s electric and empowering but a bit more seasoning in the NFL for Kris would not go amiss, I believe.

If the administration is gutted and the Cowboys front office looks to start fresh with a new coaching regime, a lot of new questions come into play but the biggest one is will they view Dak as the franchise QB going forward or will they start a new search for the next face of the franchise. If the latter (which would seem most likely, I’d imagine) that potentially means waiting until 2020, where the Cowboys next first round pick waits to address the QB position in a meaningful way. And, of course, as we all know, there are no guarantees the Cowboys will find one even there. Next year could be the beginning of a very long wait just like following Aikman waiting for Romo was. That would be a horrific waste of the best defense and best running back we have seen in these parts in decades as a fanbase.

Or the Cowboys could promote from within and try and win now, as I believe they are built to do.

Is the roster perfect?

Of course not! No roster in the salary cap era is. But it’s pretty darn close, all things considered. It won’t stay that way for long because the Cowboys have several players that are about to get paid and when that happens, the Cowboys will once again have to take shortcuts elsewhere to fill out the roster.

Zeke, Lawrence, Cooper, Dak, Beasley, to name a few, will all be expecting massive contracts most likely and as a result, the Cowboys will be unable to keep all of them, to say nothing of the other role players the Cowboys will have to pay. Unless the Cowboys get incredibly lucky in an upcoming draft, that will mean another several years of rebuilding in the new Head Coaches image. After all when a Head Coach wins he prefers to do so with a team that has his fingerprints all over it or live under the shadow of winning with someone else’s team.

But what if the Cowboys next Head Coach’s fingerprints are already all over this team right under Garrett’s nose? What if we could keep the coaches of the current administration that we like and wave goodbye to the rest? What if we already know the Head Coach of the future has a great relationship with the Jones family and has already demonstrated the ability to work well within the confines of a Jones family ran business?

What if the Cowboys appointed none other than Will McClay as your next Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys?

You may or may not know this, but the position last held by McClay before he became the Assistant Director of Player Personnel for the Dallas Cowboys, was Head Coach for the Dallas Desperados. Granted, the NFL and Arena Football are two completely different animals, but I’d imagine as far as the Head Coach is concerned, the main difference is the level of visibility and the amount of time that has to be devoted to answering questions for the media. Other than that, I’d guess his function is pretty close to the same.

McClay’s track record as a Head Coach is about as impressive as it gets: Over the course of five season McClay accumulated an overall record of 55-28-1 and he was 1 and 3 in the postseason. To be honest, I know nothing about how McClay garnered that success or the scheme he was married to, but I’d guess McClay would be the type of coach that conforms his scheme to the players as opposed to attempting to conform his players to a certain scheme, as does the current administration.

He is a great evaluator of talent, as evidenced by our drafts since he took over the reins. He knows how to break down film, considering his weekly segment on the motherships Special Edition. And his track record suggest he knows how to motivate players. In a weird way, it might just make too much sense.

Thoughts?
