Turns out one of my wine reps (Sergio) used to work for Fuji Film, and knows Bob Lilly quite well through his photography work. He tells me that every positive thing that's ever been said about Bob is true, he's the perfect gentleman and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it for the day.

Sergio was having a photo exhibition at the McNay Museum here in San Antonio years ago and Bob was a contributing artist to it. Sergio tells him on the phone that they usually don't have much of a turnout for these sorts of things, especially for a younger salesperson new to the business. Sergio orders up catering from Crumpets for around 40-50 people.

The exhibition starts at 4:30, and at 4:00 there's a line outside the doors waiting to get in. Bob walks in with his wife after signing a few autographs out in the hot sun and tells Sergio, "hope you don't mind, I called a few friends on the radio." Final tally for the night was over 900 people. The owner of Crumpets supposedly closed the restaurant and was shuttling food back and forth until 10:00.

Another story he had comes from Super Bowl VI. He said that Landry had the defense playing conservative the first quarter and the defensive starters wanted to get off the leash and give 'em hell. After a fumble recovery and the offense driving, Pugh and Lilly get together on the sideline and chat for a few seconds. The defensive players were instructed not to walk between the sidelines and I think Lilly so they could get the signal called in. We score a field goal, defense back on the field.

The call comes in, and it's another conservative defensive call for 3rd down. Lilly and Pugh have a feeling that Miami is going to try and break the stalemate on 3rd down and try to get rolling. The story goes that Lilly and Pugh change the play in the huddle but Lee Roy Jordan calls them on it. Team goes with Lilly's change.

Result was the 29 yard sack of Griese. Bob said he yelled at Griese like a man possessed on that play as he chased him down and from that point on the defense was in Griese's head. They get back to the sideline, and Landry gives them a stare because he had a good idea of what happened. No words, just "a stare that could melt rock" from what Sergio said.

Anyway, thought I'd share.

I love it! There's a reason why Lilly has always been one of my heroes, he's just a great man in every area of life.

Great stuff, Saltwater. Lilly was actually my first-ever interview. I was just a high school kid, doing a mentorship with a local TV station as part of an internship class I was taking. I saw that Lilly was signing autographs for the opening of a new Lowes in town, and stopped in to ask if there was any way I could get in a few questions for my class project.

He told me when the autograph session was scheduled to end, and asked if I could return when it was over. So I did, and he ended up sitting in the back of the store with me for 45 minutes telling me all kinds of brilliantly told stories about his career.

I never had the privilege to watch him play, but I can only imagine how much fun it would have been to see him representing the star every Sunday.

Lilly one of the greatest players in NFL history. End of conversation.

During my junior or senior year, Bob Lilly was the featured/guest speaker at our end of the year football awards banquet (He lived in Las Cruces at the time). My dad was able to get his autograph on the program (He followed him into the restroom and scored me that autograph).

Fred Young and Eric Dickerson also spoke to the team that year.

that story about Landry's play calling was the biggest criticism I always had with him.

Dallas should have been better than they were in big games with less conservative play calling on both sides.

That's a great story about one of the most memorable plays in Cowboys history.

I had not heard it before. Thanks for posting it!

for me it was when he tried to get cute and worked so hard to surprise the other side when it would have been better to just take it straight to them.

Great story. And one of my heroes growing up as well. Gotta love Mr. Cowboy.

Thanks for sharing friendly conversations...:starspin

My boyfriend who is at the HOF induction events this weekend (the family knows Faulk well), said he saw Renfro, Wright, Lilly, and the triplets there for Sanders.

I asked him to get me an autograph of Lilly or anyone really since I'm currently out of the country and couldn't be there.

*CROSS FINGERS!*

What a great person and player -- we sure could use guys like this on the team today. And in the coaching ranks, ownership, etc....

I love reading stories about our former players. Thanks salty.

Got his autograph! sorry, this is a skype snapshot
