Yes, it's possible that Church could be a Nickel LB in some situations. They didn't use a Safety that way last season, but they didn't have anybody to replace Church at the Safety position.

I expect the Nickel LBs to be Holloman and Carter or Durant.

The hype for Dixon might be a little premature. We need to see him in more coverage situations which was expected to be his weak spot. He was a know big hitter which is primarily what he did in the preseason game.

We made Church a legitimate S for mere hitting? See Dixon must be a S/CB with the potential to take over...no he can't just play better than the trash currently held @ that position. Maybe year 4 can work in the coverage dept? "You see, in this scheme..." No one needed to replace Church.;)

I tried to use the decoder ring that I use on CCBoy's posts, but it's not working on yours...

Was just saying we seem to hold a high standard considering the lack of talent seen at the position since Roy. Move a S to LB (this ain't Madden!, despite the fact they won't be relevant @ their current position...) People referencing Church as a success story(primary culprit in the poor pass D last season) Heath to LB (don't ruin his potential..'not ready' what potential?) I wish I was given the same saving grace (he doesn't have the skills but tries hard?) We see Dixon for 1 game (no fake strip moves...give away to poor talent)...Heath is an athlete, not a S. Showed no improvement?

I swear if he didn't go for those fake strips, fans wouldn't give him the same credit. "He's trying, look!" Ohhhh, that is what a S looks like:D

there is alot of hate for a bottom of the roster guy who was forced into playing way before he was ready.
thats the truth man. Heath came from a small school somewhere and was pulled off the practice squad as a rookie to start as one of the toughest positions in Kiffins scheme. Dude really needs people to get off his back and let him learn from a veteran before saying hes so bad. he wasnt a top 5 pick from Alabama but he had to play like it

The anger is @ management, not with the playero_O We on that 3 year starter plan...for a UDFA? This line of thinking makes Church a starter @ this heralded position.

The hate for a guy like Heath is silly. You probably want to see some young guy like Hamilton beat out Heath; however, if Hamilton had played in place of Heath last season, it would be him that you hate and you would want the unknown Heath to beat him out.

Any small school UDFA that is forced to start at Safety as a rookie is going to look terrible.

I have no problem with small school UDFA. I don't care who they replace him with. It could be you. Heath is terrible. Absolutely terrible. It doesn't matter where he went to school he's flat out awful in every possible way on a football field.

Heath was bad last year. Most people complain about him getting "trucked". So you're saying he was in the right position and wasn't strong enough to make a play? Guess what, most small school players need a year or two in an NFL program to add strength. The best chance is that he will never be anything, most guys in the 5th round and later aren't, but take a chance on someone who seems to have some head for the game and decent measurables who needs to add some mass. If we ditch him this year for someone we think is better, great. If we don't and he spends the year on special teams, where he was pretty good according to most last year, then he's the cheaper version of McCray, who was also a terrible safety but a very good special teams player.

Heath was an undrafted free agent rook that got thrown into a defense that was falling apart and in shambles. He gets picked on most notably by Matthew Stafford and Calvin Freaking Johnson and people hate him?

Sometimes you 'fans' make me sick.

Heath is not the reason this defense sucks. Kid is a decent ST who just lacks the strength in only his SECOND season and only small school experience to boot. Injuries have forced him in the lineup prematurely, he is definitely athletic enough, works hard and durable - player is worth grooming if we have roster space. Hate is overblown for a backup.

It still doesn't mean he can play at this level. He is average at best. A career special teamer, which isn't a bad thing. I'm just tired of the coaching staff attempting to shoehorn him into the starting lineup, although this game it was out of necessity, and it's preseason so who cares.

But he's just simply not good, man. I'm not hating him, just hating how we keep putting him out there like he's going to do any better than someone else who has a startlingly better level of athleticism.

Also, as an aside, I'm sick and tired of people trying to convert lifelong, career safeties to linebackers. There's a big reason why players don't just switch positions. It's not that simple.

There's only been one guy who ever made the switch from linebacker to safety and did it at an All-Pro level and we know him as "Woody." He was an elite, rare talent. Jeff Heath would get run the hell over as a LB trying to stack and shed pulling guards or OTs getting to the second level.

If Heath makes the team and Dixon is cut i think people are going to have a tough time accepting that. i think it likely.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. This is the same braintrust that brought us Heath and BW Webb in the first place.

'The hell are you smoking over there? Not only are your posts borderline gibberish, even when you clarify they are point blank wrong.

Barry Church was the best defender and possibly the best DB on this team last season.

The worst ranked D, etc. Gotta keep that staple:confused: Our best defender was a slow safety specializing in clean up tackles? "If you can't see how Church contributes...":D
