For my third version of the top ten, I thought about incorporating trades, but I will wait until my 4th and 5th version before doing so. Teams that I see cracking or trying to deal into the top ten include the Lions, Rams and Patriots.
1. Carolina - Newton. Recent overtures by the Carolina FO and Ron Rivera have lended a lot of credence that they've targeted Newton as their pick. I would expect that they'll move forward with their plan of a new look for the franchise by taking the Heisman trophy winner.
2. Denver - Dareus. No reason to stray on this pick as it's not only a need but in-line with where Dareus is expected to go. Denver should at least sack the QB next year.
3. Buffalo - Gabbert. Buffalo has publicly stated they are looking for a QB to groom and it's either Gabbert here or a second-tier guy later. Gabbert has the tools though I think he's going to more of a David Carr than a Matt Ryan.
4. Bengals - Green. I wouldn't write off Peterson, but Green is a no-brainer here for a team with nothing at wideout with the departure of their over the hill gang.
5. Cardinals - Miller. I really think that Buffalo is going to give him a long look, but ultimately the Cards will breathe a sigh of relief when Miller is available. Don't overlook Peterson in an upset, but the need to generate a pass rush takes precedent.
6. Browns - Jones. This is a mild upset. This was thought to be Peterson's floor and very well may be, but the Browns need a #1 WR. There is a clear deviation between Green/Jones and the rest of the WR class.
7. 49ers - Peterson. No matter how you slice it, you'll never convince me that Peterson slips to #9. Even dropping this low is a long shot, but the 49ers would never pass up a need position for someone of his caliber.
8. Titans - Fairley. This has been a popular place to slot Fairley due to what's happening in front of them. He's lost a bit of his luster as he was mocked #1 in January often, but it seems that he's been exposed as a possible one year wonder and a guy that won't dominate in the pros as much as college.
9. Cowboys - Smith. I've mocked Watt here repeatedly and still believe he could be a darkhorse, but we've invested a lot of time into Smith and you don't use those resources to simply throw up smokescreens. Smith will start at RT, but don't be surprised if he and Free switch. He can have a productive career in Dallas and be in the Pro Bowl on an annual basis.
10. Commanders - Locker. The 'wow' pick of round one. Washington has had their eye on Locker for over a year now. It's no secret that Washington has to address the position and I doubt they go the FA route again (especially since FA is an unknown). Grossman will man the wagon until 2012 when Jake picks up the reins.
