Help Free?

It just might be that Free is not a RT. RT and LT are not interchangeable. The attitude of a RT as opposed to a LT is different. It may well be that we were better off the way it was before. Free is better suited to LT and Smith may be a RT. I just wonder how well Free could play at LT if he had an excellent LG there with him. When he had a good LG, he played pretty well at LT.

I don't know but neither of our Tackles are playing very well right now IMO.

He was a good enough RT a couple of years back to get a big contract. I just don't understand why he is so bad now.

That's been an issue for awhile, play calling. Screens and bootlegs seem to be missing from JG's playbook, and when you have a struggling OLine, those should be mainstays to help protect the QB. Now that Murray is back, we should expect to see more PA passes and more effective, since he is a genuine threat. It really is mind boggling why JG doesn't call more screens and bootlegs, Tony excels at rolling out and throwing. If Tony tucked the ball and ran once or twice a game like he did last week for that nice gain, it really puts more pressure on the Defense. That split second of indecision by a defender will help open some passing lanes.

I'm with ya on running more of those type plays and definitely a head scratcher when it comes to JG's game planning.
Great post roadtrip635. You are right on the money. Our coaches get paid good money to make these observations and have missed the bus.

I don't think that he got his big contract at RT. I think he got it after he had already moved to LT. However, your point is taken. He was not a starter at RT for a full season so it may be that teams had not figured him out yet. Now, they have plenty of tape on him and they know what he can and can not do.

There were some good suggestions about how to help Free in another thread...

-More production out of the 3WR. Up to this point the 3WR is giving virtually nothing

This would require benching Ogletree's sorry but and playing the best guy. And around and around we go.......

If the case is due to Free's contract then what is the deal with O Tree? He sucks and is a complete moron. I just don't get it.

This organization seems to have an issue with hierarchy. They named Ogletree the #3 receiver in training camp and he just isn't going to lose that status in season except to injury.

There is some reason not to pull the trigger too quickly--see Kapernick/Smith situation in San Francisco, but I don't think the Ogletree and Free situations really compare. Free stunk most of last year and Ogletree has been a bum for like ever.

i cant see any reason why Free hasnt been replaced by Parnell. its crazy though Free has had some horrible 1st halves, and played alot better in the 2nd half, kinda like the rest of the team.
Then why not have Parnell start and play the first half, then bring in Free in the 2nd (if needed) :)

Back when I was in college there was a LB on the team who was a better player than the starter. We all knew it. Hell even the starter knew it. But this kid was a walk on and there wasn't a scholarship for him until the other guy left because he had one.

There is politics in football. I've seen it.

I worry at times that it exists at the pro level too. Free starting over Parnell is a prime example of my fear of this. is it because he's paid too much to be a backup?

I hope not. But to convince me otherwise Free needs to finally be the guy he once was that was filling in for Colombo so well that Flo was sent packing.

Jerry wrote this slug a big fat check. Jerry's ego wont let JG pull the plug.

this is the exact type of thing that I was hoping would change once Jason became the head coach and a big reason why I am so disappointed in him. he is way more of a players coach then I expected him to be. this type of thing is poison to the culture. the best players need to play, particularly when that player is responsible for protecting our franchise qb.

It has, but so far mostly in off seasons. Colombo, Gurode, and Davis along with Roy and Barber were all big fat checks under performing.

I do not know if that is the reasoning behind it. I just worry that it could be. Maybe they see something in him that we don't, but for my opinion, Parnell was better.

Free has been inconsistent this year. He played well in the loss against the Commanders and Kerrigan the week before. Even in this past game he played much better in the second half after making Graham appear the Pro Bowler in the first. He played well against the Bears and Ravens.

I know people want to string him up but you cannot manage people like that. Garrett has the canned theme of 'adversity' and all that and Free after sucking, comes back and our offense scores 28 points in the second half.

He is not worth his contract so he won't be back. Let that set the realist heart at ease.

I am pretty certain he will be back. There is no way that the team could absorb the cap hit. I think it would be around $10 mil.....ouch!

They will spread it over two years.

In other words he'll be a June 1st cut.

The only way he has a shot of staying is to greatly reduce his salary for next season... Greatly.

inconsistency to me means the guy is not trying hard all the time. He is getting lazy until he gets jacked up by the coaches.

Free's 2013 Cap Hit:

Cut 4.175M
Keep 11.175M (4.175M + 7M)

Well for the money he's making and his play in the past he shouldn't need help but your right he does. The problem with this team is once you get paid you don't get pulled unless you get hit by a car and can't play.......

bingo!
