Can a swap of Williams, Barber, Davis and Newman for Mankins and Asomugha work?

I'm obviously not talking trade here. Just an outright release to free up a little 2011 cap space and huge cap space going forward needed to pay Mankins and Asomugha.

So here's the questions that need to be answered. Feel free to chime in with opinions and certainly the missing facts needed.

1) Specific contract details for Williams, Barber, Davis and Newman? This is absolutley step one. Need to know the perhaps modest cap savings in 2011 and more significant savings in 2012 and beyond if cut now.

2) How appealing would the Cowboys be to Mankins and Asomugha? Any chance we may be at the top of their lists making a signing just a little easier?

3) What size contracts will these guys accept from the Cowboys?
I'll speculate here.

Mankins 6yrs 60mil 20mil SB.
Possible cap numbers going forward:
2011 4.5mil 2012 8.0mil 2013 10.0mil 2014 12.0mil 2015 12.0mil 2016 13.5mil

Asomugha 6yrs 90mil 36mil SB.
Possible cap numbers going forward:
2011 7.0mil 2012 12.0mil 2013 16.0mil 2014 17.0mil 2015 18.0mil 2016 20.0mil

So the cap number for these two players would average 25mil over 6 years. 11.5mil in yr one and 20.0mil in yr two.

Food for thought here. I'm fairly certain that all four guys I earmarked for release are under contract beyond 2011 and that the cap number for them in 2012 is almost certainly in excess of 30mil!

OMT Thought I'd add the resumes of these guys.

Mankins 6-4 307
Born 1982
Season played 6
ProBowl 2007,09,10
All-Pro 2010

Asomugha 6-3 215
Born 1981
Seasons played 8
ProBowl 2008,09,10
All-Pro 2008,10

So we're inserting two legit All-Pro guys with a ton of good football left.

Only question I have is what side will Asomugha play? I thought I recalled seeing him play the left side and I was right. He played the left side from 2005-2007 and then switched to the right in 2008. Now since he's played the right side at a All-Pro level the past three years, I guess that's where we'd want to keep him.
But can Jenkins play the left side?

I think this is certainly possible. Stephen is a cap guru and I know they frontloaded a bunch of the huge contracts for the uncapped year.

Could they possibly be planning to sign Mankins AND Nnamdi?:) :)

Also, signing Jenkins to a long term contract isn't a given. He hasn't earned anything to deserve it.

Keep in mind that Free will be paid also.

So what are you saying? Adding super blue chip high priced FAs never works?

How'd adding Deon Sanders work out for us? Do we win SBXXX without him?

How about Owens? Three Pro-Bowls, One All-pro. Lead the league in TDs over his three years here.

The only thing worse than having a cap problem which keeps you from resigning your own good players, or worse yet releasing players at the tale end of deals is..............

Having a lack of talent problem.

In the current system(which will probably continue) teams not only have a salary cap, they also have a salary floor. I believe the floor is 10-15% lower than the cap.

So money gonna get spent one way or another. I prefer to spend it on the best. Because in my experience, teams willing to paying up for the highest caliber FAs, win more often than the lose.

And it's not as if I'm just throwing out a blanket statement of "hey lets go spend 150 million dollars over the next 6 years" without a legit plan of where the money is coming from.

This is a simple reallocation cap dollars from players who don't deserve them to players who do.

There is 0% chance we let go of Newman. Rob Ryan talked about him in particular when he watched film.

All I'm saying is that these kind of threads really don't mean anything. It's fun to speculate, but asking a bunch of people on a forum if this is a good idea or not is pointless.

Let me ask you a question?

Do you think the staff of the Cowboys are reading this post?

We all can come up with a this or that trade/free agency stuff, but none of us have any control over any of it.

Carry on...

:)

Got it. Ok well with that said, can you direct me to the useful threads.
You know the ones that really count.
The ones where we have control of the team or where we know the team itself is actually reading.:)

What do you think were doing here?

Wishing that Jerry would step down as the GM?

Ya I also heard that and it made me feel much better about him and of my own opinion of him which is higher than most.

Don't know if Asomugha is even on the radar for us even considering his past relationship with Ryan.

Do you see a fit here? Any scenario where we get him. Maybe Newman's a keeper at FS.

I doubt very much that he is. I'd say there is less than 5% chance we even look at Nnamdi.

Not in any way trying to be a smart ***, but here's something to consider....

Sometime this spring or summer, a new deal will most likely get signed. At that time, a FA signing period will begin.

Based on all the availible info, one of 31 teams not named the Raiders will be signing Asomugha to a large FA contract and another team not named the Patriots will be signing Mankins.

I don't think it's crazy to at least speculate if the Cowboys should be one of those teams.

Yeah we do. I get so sick of this. Deion was an added piece to an already established team. We had already won before Deion came. You act like he was the final piece to get us over the hump. Now if you want to say without Deion the 49ers don't win the year before I can see a point but that Cowboys team would have won without Deion.

Since you asked, the answer to you 2nd question is YES.

This is a message board man. The whole point of a message board is to discuss possibilities. It's not to audition for a spot in Jerrys front office. Cmon.

That's a low percentage. If I may ask...why that number? I think it's more like 60 when you look at our secondary and Jerrys wallet.:)

Because he was. The reality of it is that the 1995 was only a shadow of the 1992 and 1993 team since Jimmy was gone.

I actually believe from a pure talent angle the 1994 team that came up short was the best.

But as far as the 1995 team goes, I believe you're forgetting a couple things:
1) How truely great Sanders was. CB, PR and the handful of Offensive snaps he took that demanded so much attention from the defense. He impacted the game in so many ways and was worth every penny of the 35mil he got. Still our all-time best FA signing.
2) Kevin Smith's achillies injury. IMO he's the forgetton guy on those first two SB teams. He was huge for us and losing him opening day of the 1995 season was a killer.

No one knows what would have happen without Sander's signing. IMO we don't make to SB XXX without him.
