General consensus seems to be that this movie has great CGI, but little to do with actual battle of Stalingrad. Not sure if it will stand up well to more iconic films like Enemy at the Gates, which showed a lot more actual historical bits, and was based on a sniper duel that actually happened during the fighting in the city.
Russian production, which I tend to generally find a bit ponderous.
Tried to get the youtube trailer to show up, but no go here either, even following the instructions.
I was just going on the biography for the Sniper duel. Pretty astounding events in Stalingrad all over. When I was a teenager, I got to meet a Russian officer who'd been a tank platoon commander at Kursk. Even then I knew enough to be impressed.Little to no evidence that the Zaitsev - Koenig sniper duel actually happened, Enemy at the Gates was a good movie though.
The battle of Stalingrad was an absolutely incredible display of the true limits of human endurance, on both sides. Lots of excellent reading for those interested.
The depth and scope of that four year struggle is unlike anything in human history with estimates as high as 30 million total deaths for the Eastern front. Amazing.
The previous winter the Wehrmacht were fighting in -30 to -40 C temperatures outside Moscow in summer uniforms!
During the first terrible summer the Soviets experienced three different encirclements with over 500,000 prisoners.
Prokhorovka saw an armor battle involving over 1000 tanks!
This is a cool interactive web site the Russians put together for the 50th anniversary on the war.. http://english.pobediteli.ru/
Link to photos of the amazing Stalingrad war memorial .. http://www.amusingplanet.com/2013/10/soviet-war-memorial-at-mamayev-kurgan.html

Moral of the story is, never invade Russia, because it will be the worst winter in a century. Napolean. Charles XII.

Either people don't read their history or generally think others just didn't do it right. Hitler was told to wait until the next year to invade Russia but he wouldn't listen. Thank goodness.
Actually Russia would have been stronger the next year. They were rebuilding their officer corps after the stalin purge of 1938, and they were figuring things out that the fins had taught them in the Winter war. So really Germany's only chance was in 1941. And they came incredibly close to winning two separate times as it was. even the Russians admit that.

Thank you for saving me from the violence of that trailer.

That was my point although most of it was the winter thingie.
The russians were lucky- the winter arrived earlier then normal. And Hitler was so overconfident he had ordered that no winter preparations needed to be made since the war would be over by then. It was stupid mistakes like that - in reality- that made the difference. Such as waiting as long as they did to launch the campaign- almost the end of June. The excuse was to wait for the ground to dry- but that was not a real problem in all honesty. But it did cost them at least a month. They could have launched the attack as early as mid May. That extra month could have made all the difference in the world.
Yes. Good stuff. Hitler didn't listen to his commanders.
