It’s time to set the record straight with the Dallas Cowboys and their defense.

Despite the prevailing narrative that the Cowboys play a Tampa 2-style defense, because of defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli’s roots as defensive line coach in Tampa on those great Buccaneer defenses in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Cowboys actually play a strong majority of their defensive snaps with a single-high safety in the middle of the field. The reason for this lies not in something specific it provides against the pass, but rather against the run.

To understand the reasoning, it is important to have a basic understanding of the way teams defend the run. The Cowboys are almost exclusively a “one-gap” team, meaning they choose to give their defensive linemen and linebackers a single gap as their primary run responsibility...

I love that Dallas isn't putting the flotsam and jetsam of the league in these positions any more...they are starting to upgrade these types of spots with guys that have had some success, breeding more competition amongst the unit...I don't expect Paea to win the starting job, by any means, but he will be a nice rotational guy and there will be little to no drop-off during a game when he is in there
